That's a great in-universe explanation. Unfortunately Toriyama wasn't as creative, deciding on Goten's name by replacing the character for Sky (空) in Goku's name with Heaven (天) simply because it seemed more grandiose:

>"The characters have the meaning of 'Understanding the Heavens', which is on an even bigger scale than 'Gokū' ['Understanding the Sky' and various other interpretations]." [DBF p.158]

> For starters, can a 30 year old man enjoy DBZ?

Anyone from all ages and genders can enjoy the series.

> Should I start with the DBZ TV show (seasons 1-9?) and then watch the movies after?

For an actual good viewing experience, it would be recommended that you start with Dragon Ball and then go either to Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball Z Kai. You could alternatively purchase the manga. You're probably not interested in that option, because you're already asking what to purchase for home video.

For the movies, there is a viewing order list here that you can watch with the show. Just keep in mind that the movies are not really apart of the universe. Consider them "what-if" stories, besides the latest two movies (Battle of Gods and Revival 'F') that got their adaptations in Dragon Ball Super - the latest anime that is currently airing.

Note: I'll have a reference from our FAQ about Dragon Ball Kai at the end of this post. It would be a quick way of watching the show in English, until you get the end of episode 98.

> But seriously, can a grown man enjoy this? I always liked the idea of Super Saiyans and the insane amount of power they have. I absolutely adore that cell phone game Dokkan battle (how do you guys feel about that game?).

If you're liking the mobile game, have an interest in One Piece (Shōnen Genre), then you'll likely like the series as much.

> And one more question... why are they all named after vegetables?
> Piccolo: Pickle Raditz: Radish Vegeta: Vegetable Kakarot (spelling?): Carrot?

For starters, Piccolo is not named after "pickle". That's a common misconception. He's named after the small flute, called the Piccolo.

Piccolo

---

Named after the piccolo, a small kind of flute ("piccolo" is Italian for "small"). In-universe, "piccolo" is supposed to mean "another world" in the Namekian language.

  • Toriyama Explanation: "I decided that to be silly I'd use a cute name for a scary guy. From that, Piccolo's henchmen became a series of musical instruments." [DBF]

  • Source Spelling: ピッコロ/Pikkoro

  • Name Spelling: same

The explanation for why Kakarrot, Raditz, and the rest of the Saiyans you'll see in the series, are just from puns off of vegetables. Other characters in the series are named usually after foods or drinks. I won't spoil you too much. If you're wanting to spoil yourself, we have a name-pun roundup that is up to date. Explanations are given, too.

    Kakarrot

    ---

A play on "carrot". Perhaps Toriyama picked this vegetable for Gokū's Saiyan name because its orange color matches his orange Turtle School uniform?

  • Toriyama Explanation: "Saiyan is, of course, a pun on vegetable. Although they're a fighting race, I decided on the ambiance of reversing 'vegetable' [yasai in Japanese]. Because of this, the Saiyans all have names that are puns off of vegetable names. 'Kakarrot' comes from 'carrot'." [DBF]

  • Source Spelling: キャロット/kyarotto

  • Name Spelling: カカロット/Kakarotto

    Raditz

    ---

  • Toriyama Explanation: "From the vegetable 'radish'." [DBF]

  • Source Spelling: ラディッシュ/radisshu

  • Name Spelling: ラディッツ/Radittsu

    Vegeta

    ---

Derived from "vegetables". Because the Saiyans are all named for vegetables, its fitting that their planet and rulers would be named after the word "vegetable" itself.

  • Toriyama Explanation: "Since he's the prince of the Saiyans, his name was taken directly from 'vegetable'." [DBF]

  • Source Spelling: ベジタブル/bejitaburu

  • Name Spelling: ベジータ/Bejiita

    What is Dragon Ball Kai?

    ---
Dragon Ball Kai (known as Dragon Ball Z Kai in the west) is Dragon Ball Z with most of the episode padding and filler content (scenes not present in the original comic book) removed. Kai has a much more faithful-to-the-Japanese English dub than Z does, and as a result, it is often recommended for new viewers who do not wish to watch the series subtitled.

The Majin Buu arc of Dragon Ball Kai has yet to be released outside of Japan. Because of this, if you choose to watch Kai in English, you will need to switch to episode 200 of Dragon Ball Z after finishing episode 98.

While Kai was heavily censored for American television, it is available uncut on DVD and Blu-ray, though unfortunately, the first few episodes remain censored for content on all mediums.
