Unfortunately, this method doesn't work - at least to my knowledge. I wanted to do the same thing, but it didn't work. Ended up buying a wired 360 controller, and that works like a charm. They're pretty cheap on Amazon right now. http://www.amazon.com/Wired-USB-Controller-Xbox-360-Black/dp/B007LQG9A6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371519436&sr=8-1&keywords=wired+xbox+360+controller

Are you sure it was an official one though? this one looks like an official one but it's a knockoff.

I still have 2 day one controllers that work, maybe you just got unlucky.

You can get them pretty cheap nowadays. There's always ebay and craigslist if $13 is too much. Or you could check out /r/hardwareswap or even /r/pcmasterrace, I'm sure they could help you get away from consoles.

$15, looks like. You could also buy your son one as a "Christmas Present."

You do know they sell these?

The 360 wireless adapter made by Microsoft is $20. A brand new 360 wired controller is $25. Maybe $5 is a lot of money to you, but for $5 more you can have another controller that will work with your PC and your XBOX.

I use one of those for my emulators and some controller games. Mine is actually a better model than that, but they don't seem to carry mine anymore. It's good, not great, but still one of the better handheld controllers available.

Problem is, you're expecting Microsoft and Sony to create hardware that costs more to produce than they'll sell it for day 1 ---- those days are over in virtually all consumer electronics. Even if they are simply breaking even, MS will not be introducing a super expensive/high-end console into the marketplace (over $400 USD in parts at launch for at or under $400) because they no longer have to do that to have a competitive edge.

For example, Nintendo's WiiU will most likely debut in the $249-299 range and will have $50-$75 profit built into each unit sold. That's why Nintendo's hardware has to be so dated - they HAVE to keep costs for the WiiU below $175-225 MAX. And keep in mind the controller will be pricey (probably be sold at $79-99 at retail) so that probably costs $60-80 to make at least. So Nintendo doesn't really have $175-225 to work with for the actual system --- they have MAYBE $95-145 for the main part. That's why their upcoming hardware is somewhere between 360 and PS3 level of performance.

Meanwhile, Microsoft doesn't have to worry about a pricey controller - and its users will be okay in paying $299-399 for a system day 1 so they can literally spend $225-$250 (for $299 price point) or $325-$350 and STILL make a $50-75 profit on each item sold.

Furthermore, let's take a look at what a normal consumer could get for $400 in parts (comparable to the MS $399 price point):

  • Processor: i3 3.3 GHz Dual Core $125

  • Motherboard: $50

  • HDD: 250GB HDD $70

  • Power Supply: 480W $20

  • Video Card: nVidia GeForce 440 $50

  • RAM: 8GB DDR 1333 $40

  • Extras (WiFi adapter, Controller, custom case, packaging ($5), etc.): $60

Total: $415 (includes S&H for items too, could be lower even)

Now that's RETAIL. What you and I would pay buying off the shelf products with markups/profit built-in. If Microsoft was going to order 5,000,000 of these things directly from manufacturers every few years, you can be almost certain they would get a 20-30% discount on everything. Some stuff, like the packaging, controller and case could be made in-house for dirt cheap. So instead of $415, we're looking at maybe $330 to produce this stuff (w/ 20% discount). Let's add in 10% tax and we're at $363 total. At a $399 price point, that still gives every unit a $37 profit for MS. And even if we want to get picky and say there's 30 minutes of real-human labor in each unit made, that's maybe $5-10 max since most of that would be at a place like Foxconn in China and not in the US where people are paid much more.

Wired Xbox controllers are like $20 (http://www.amazon.com/Wired-USB-Controller-Xbox-360-Black/dp/B007LQG9A6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1371002100&sr=8-3&keywords=xbox+360+controller+wired)

So thats like $35 which is still less than a brand new controller for either side.

I've used it in a few other PC games too. Like SBK. Not a big investment really, esp if you have an xbox. I imagine a ps3 controller might work, if those are usb.

Most likely will have to go online. this one is a generic one, the actual microsoft ones are a little more expensive. Mine's actually a generic gamestop brand one but it does the trick.

u/aidanhoofe · 1 pointr/xbox360

The chances of getting a fake unintentionally are quite low, if you directly from Amazon and check that it says under brand "Microsoft", but id also check the reviews.

There is a good guide on eBay on how to spot the more convincing fakes.

Here are some fakes if you are looking to intentionally buy one: 1 2 3

Amazon US manage to keep sellers from using misleading language in the title, and usually require the seller to put a brand name other than Microsoft at the beginning of the title, unfortunately on the UK site it is more common, as you can see here.

Many modified controllers use fake parts, because the fakes usually have test points that can be used, making it much easier. Often the seller will use a genuine case and a fake circuit board, meaning there is no way to be 100% certain without opening the controller.

Fakes should always feel lighter than a genuine controller, however I once purchased one, where the seller had ripped out the rumble motors and put a ziplock bag of sand in each handle.

u/DrStephenFalken · 1 pointr/xbox360

okay thanks for finally explaining that.

With that said you're better off buying a 3rd party controller for the 360 they run the same price as a random USB controller. Often around $15 Another usb controller will have it's own issue. You buy a 3rd party 360 controller you'll be able to use it without an issue on 360 and play PC games with it as well.
