My Favorite Book!
Generally these lists get a lot of fiction on them, so I'll recommend The Good Women of China. This is the story of a woman who ran one of the first call-in radio shows after China started to loosen its control of the media in the 1980s. A collection of the stories that she received from her callers, it's a heartbreaking look at the condition of women at the time, when China was much more closed-off than it is now, and when it was much less modernized.
As for a book for me, along the same lines, I'd love A Dream of Ding Village.
