I can't recommend Rachel Maddow's drift enough. Dr. Maddow does what she does best, analyze the hell out of the military industrial complex's start and growth in an entertaining way.

It is a quick read but full of knuckle clenching facts. She does a remarkable job of keeping it non-partisan by showing the same tactics are used by both parties. Hell, the book was even praised on Fox News.

From the book's description, this is by far the single best line to describe our current state of affairs:

> Rachel Maddow's Drift argues that we've drifted away from America's original ideals and become a nation weirdly at peace with perpetual war.

edit: clarification

Also, read Rachael Maddow's Drift: An Unmooring of American Military Power.

A really insightful look into the Reagan ethos from when he was nobody (politically) to when he discovered that his skill as an actor and salesman was far more potent in politics than it ever was in film.

His ability to charm, misinform or just plainly lie to get his agenda through is what made him such an important figure to the far right despite his otherwise incredibly wasteful policies that increased both American military power and manufactured threats to justify spending over a trillion over an imagined threat.

Like how he'd often speak about how he hoped an alien invasion would occur so it, as an external threat, would bind mankind together to fight a common enemy. Reagan never really left Hollywood.

Rachel Maddow would have been a more apt choice for the Commander in Chief forum, that's for sure.

Shameless plug for her book Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power. I read that book in just about a day. She knows her shit and she doesn't play with kid gloves.

I'd suggest Drift for general discussion of the military and society. Plan of Attack provides pretty phenomenal inside reporting on the decision to invade Iraq and Afghanistan.

This. I highly recommend Rachel Maddow's book "Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power".

Maddow wrote an amazing book about the military, but I tell you, I cannot stand her show. She once showed like a minute's worth of chrome porn (shots of chrome ore, processed chrome, etc) when talking about something before she got to the point.

But check out the book. Fantastic read.
