The Dalai Lama calls himself "a simple monk", and maybe it's his humility and human qualities which make him so approachable.

As you probably already know, esoteric teachings are generally not for the public, for many reasons. This is probably his best book, as dzogchen is a 'higher' teaching of Tibetan Buddhism.
