From talking to you in chat I think you would benefit a bit from a run-through of everything (products, how they're used, informative videos), so I'll just do that:

MAKEUP FACE STUFF

  • YOUR FACE: So your face has a color (skin tone) and then it has an undertone. It's a little bit easier to determine your skin tone than it is your undertone, but I go by the "veins" method. If you look at your wrist, if your veins are greenish then you're warm and if you look at your wrist and see that your veins are more bluish then you are cool. It's best to look at your wrist in natural light. This is color theory, and it helps determines what colors conventionally look best. There's an excellent video color theory here and I highly recommend you give it a look.
  • MOISTURIZER: You'll want to use moisturizer because if your skin gets super dry then it flakes off and when you put any makeup on it accentuates the flakes and it just looks terrible. I really like CeraVe Cream because it isn't oily but it's super moisturizing (this is coming from someone with dehydrated eczema skin). You can use moisturizer only at night or in the morning as the first step in your makeup routine (or use it whenever, go crazy).
  • FACE PRIMER: Some sort of cream/lotion dealio that is most likely loaded with tons of silicones to make your face smooth. Primer essentially fills in all the little crags and pores and whatever so everything that you put on after it goes on smoothly. You should use it. I'm not fancy so I just use this ELF Studio Primer. Primer also comes in tone-correcting colors... say you're looking a little red, green can cancel that out so you could get a green-tinted primer. Or if it's the middle of winter and you have no tan whatsoever and you're feeling a little yellow, you could try a purple tinted primer. Basically if you remember the color wheel whatever color is opposite will cancel the other out. I haven't used any of those tone-correcting primers, but NYX has a couple that you could try out (but from your bare faced photo, it doesn't look like you need it, but just so ya know!).
  • FOUNDATION: Stuff you put all over your face to even your skin tone, it can come in powder and liquid forms. Not all of them are made equal and they can have different amounts of coverage including sheer (for those blessed with near perfect skin), light, medium, and full coverage (to cover every little blemish!). They can also come in different finishes including matte (completely flat, no shine) and dewy (a little bit of shine so you look glowy).
  • BB CREAM: Okay, so I cheat... I don't use foundation because there are too many options and it's confusing. I use a BB cream because they're sheer and they oxidize to match your skin tone and the Asian ones are nicely priced and match my skin 'cause Asian and they have nice dewy finishes and good SPF ratings. I use Skin79 Hot Pink.
  • FINISHING/SETTING POWDER: So if you're oily or if it's hot out and you're going to sweat a ton you can "set" your makeup with a powder so it absorbs the oil or whatever you produce. I don't have one to recommend because I don't go outside (I'm a redditor, what do you expect?) and I have dehydrated skin, but I thought I'd mention it. Anyway, moving along...
  • BRONZER: Basically what it sounds like, something that can add a little brown color to your face so you don't look like a porcelain doll. You can use it to add an all-over glow to your face, to fake a tan, or to contour. I use theBalm Bahama Mama bronzer which I like a lot.
  • HIGHLIGHTER: You thought we were done with face stuff... Nope. So if bronzer darkens your face, highlighter illuminates it. So let's say you're standing under a light bulb and your face looks something like this but hopefully less patchy. The parts where the light hits your face and illuminates it would be where you put the highlighter, and the places where it's darker and a shadow is cast is where you put the bronzer/contouring powder/matte brown eyeshadow/magic shadow stuff. I'm not fancy enough for highlighter yet, but I hear theBalm's Mary-Lou Manizer is good.

Okay, now we're ready to move on to the things on your face:

    YOUR EYEBROWS

  • THICK EYEBROWS ARE A THING RIGHT NOW: They've become a pretty big frickin' deal lately. I think we can attribute this whole shebang to Cara Develingne.
  • EYEBROWS + FACE SHAPE: Different eyebrow shapes mesh better with different face shapes. For example, if you have a really long face, you don't want a super high arch for your eyebrows 'cause then it'll look like you have an even longer face. I think this is a good explanation of what brow shape you'll want to consider for your face shape.
  • HOW TO SHAPE YOUR EYEBROWS: Eyebrows are serious business. There are lots of YouTube tutorials and stuff but I like this slideshow from Elle because you can flip back and forth quickly. The part about stepping back to see the effect on your face is important!
  • HOW TO FILL IN + GROOM YOUR BROWS: Okay, so now you've shaped them and whatever, and maybe you messed up or your brows are just being rude and crazy so you groom them with a little lash brush thing. You also can fill them in if they're a little thin, and here is a good tutorial on how to do that. I use NYX Eyebrow cake powder kit in black/gray which I like quite a bit.

If you're just starting out the biggest advice I can give you is go with ELF products. They're cheap, good products that won't break the bank if you decide all this make up stuff isn't for you.

When doing my face (i'll leave lips and eyeshadow out) here are the steps I take:
***

  1. Primer! Squeeze out a drop on your finger tip, then put a tiny bit on your forehead, chin, and each cheek and massage in. This will help your make up stay on, give it a nice even playing field and just makes it look so much better.

  2. Blemish Control. Now, you can use this pen if you want, a lot comes out at a time and can be a pain to cover up, I prefer this but you'll run out of the green first, but it's nice to have all the other colors for contouring. Put a bit of the green on any redness on your face, a little goes a long way! If you go with the contouring pallet, you can use the yellow to counteract any purple on your face (under your eyes) and you can use the purple to counteract any yellow on your face.

  3. Foundation! if you have a foundation you love, stick with it. I personally use Covergirl. And liquid or powder, it's totally up to you, I just work with liquid better. Now, how I do this is I put about a finger tip full on my forehead, chin, and each cheek. I use my hands to rub it in, UNLESS I have a lot of green on my face for blemishes, then I'll use a brush to rub it in. Go down your neck line a little, but not too much.

  4. Bronzer!. This will give you some dimension and added color to your face. I won't go over contouring, but if you're just doing every day make up, this great. I take a brush like this combine the four colors in the palette and go over my cheeks (below my cheek bones), run a little over my forehead and down my T-zone, and then I use the rest to go behind my ears and down my neck a little to create a blend.

  5. Blush! Now it's blush time! Get a bit on your brush, smile big and just do the apples of your cheeks while brushing a little towards your ears.

    And you're done!

I would suggest looking at ELF's actualy website, as some of the prices on Amazon were really high, plus they always have great coupons!

I am trying so hard to learn from you guys, and then I looked on Amazon for this "Lorac Behind the Scenes Eye Primer" and found out it was $20 for half an ounce.

Seriously, everyone, do I really have to shell out that much cash to achieve these awesome results? I am all about paying the extra amount to have the super ultimate better thing that lasts and lasts, but I am hesitant to just throw that much money at something that I am not totally 100% sure is going to be better than the primer I am using for my whole face right now. Really, for real, is that Lorac stuff that much better?

And should I really give up this WalMart/drugstore bs and just go through Amazon or some of those lovely stores like Ulta and Sephora to get the super ultimate stuff you all are always praising? Is it really, truly that much better?

Sing me the song of your peoples, my loves, because I adore and envy all of your gorgeous faces and I sooooo desperately want to try to achieve the awesome results you all have.

I've never tried a face primer before and this e.l.f. primer looks pretty nice. I sometimes have trouble with the staying power of my foundation

This elf face primer

And this cologne for my husband

He's running low on his good smells and I'd hate for him to start using the axe his mother bought him that stuff is terrible. Also I don't want to look a hot mess for him so primer is essential! We can go out on date nights and look/smell nice then come home and practice making a baby!

Schmidt my add on!

What makes me beautiful!

This ELF studio face primer or minty nails. Both are on my beauty wishlist. :)

I am awesome and deserve my item because I've been doing super well lately with fixing problems in my life. Huge accomplishments (For example, signing up for full time classes again, and applying for jobs...and hopefully more things like that to come). For two days straight I've been feeling well enough to leave the house, eat full meals all day, get things around the house accomplished (like packing for my move)...And then, overall just feeling...well, kinda happy today. I feel like I deserve at least a ribbon saying "good job".

This item is amazing because it would help me feel extra pretty by enabling me to do my makeup properly. It would make everything a lot smoother and blend much better. :)
