Something like this works better and is more comfortable
Have you ever tried one of those sleep eye mask things? Look how happy this guy looks with his: http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-media/product-gallery/B000JE2C9Y/ref=cm_ciu_pdp_images_1?ie=UTF8&index=1
Maybe that would keep your eyes closed?
I've been using this one for a few years. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JE2C9Y/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage
I'm not tall, but I've used these for more than a decade now:

Ignore the crunchy iconography.
They have two stretchy straps that fasten with velcro at the back, and the pad is significantly larger than the length between the outer edges of my eyes.
The straps eventually just stretch out. If your head is big enough that might not be a problem (you could just adjust the velcro position a little tighter. I just cut the ends off and staple them together at the right length.
Just use a sleep mask.
I actually use these sleep headphones that doubles as headphones and a sleep mask listening to Chapelle/Colbert/Stewart while falling asleep.

I work nightshifts and have developed my own routine. First: I take a shower. Doesn't have to be a fast one and you don't have to wet your hair. I can't remember the science behind why this works, but it really does.
Then I make some tea with valerian root. Chamomile and lavender are lovely and sweet at calming you down, like a mom tucking you into bed. Valerian root is more like getting hit with a sleep bat, hard. Also, because it's an herbal tea, you want it to steep for longer. 10-15min about. I let it steep while I shower. It might smell weird, but it doesn't taste weird.
I live next to a train, so I have to wear earbuds and play straight white noise drone. I also put on a *good* eyemask (look for one that doesn't fall off and does not let eye in from under the mask... I use this thing from amazon). I use it all the time now; the sun sucks and wakes me up. Then, to complete my look, I throw on a snug hat so nothing falls off my dang face and for just a little extra 'fuck off, train' cushion over my ears. Sometimes, if even that isn't putting me out, I play some asmr from youtube. This weirdo has been conking me out as of late.
The biggest piece of advice I have though... is to avoid anything interesting or engaging.
And seriously, screw the sun. Make sure your phone/computer/ect switches from blue light to orange light around bedtime. The blue light is too much like the sun and the sun sucks.
Hey so, some wireless headphones will fix the noise issue, as for the brightness, remember these? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000JE2C9Y/ref=mp_s_a_1_3/178-2588291-7387652?qid=1395547283&sr=1-3&pi=SY200_QL40 they work. Maybe you tried one before and it didn't, me too. Until someone got me a good one, that exact one in particular. You are in total darkness and it is wonderful and I've slept like a baby since period. I hope you'll try it! As for the alarm, maybe once the noise and brightness stop keeping you up an extra hour you'll be able to wake up the hour earlier?? Hope it all works out!
I've wanted one of [these] (http://www.amazon.com/Dream-Zone-Earth-Therapeutics-Sleep/dp/B000JE2C9Y/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2O3VGT6MWIIZX&coliid=I1EKWJRD3WEUXP) for a long time :D
Hi :D
I am in desperate need of this! My room SUCKS in the summer and even with the blinds closed and all of that, it gets super bright. Thanks for the contest!

there is also a more expensive version with a gel inside, that cools your eyes. good if you have a severe allergy and itching/reddened eyes.
definitely get a soft little eye-mask thing, so you can sleep at any time. something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Dream-Zone-Earth-Therapeutics-Sleep/dp/B000JE2C9Y/ref=pd_sxp_grid_i_0_1
Why not just wear a sleep mask?
