We have hawks and owls. We don't have electric fencing, but have a 30x50 chicken yard adjacent to the coop, regular 5' wire fencing. On top we used this plastic netting, fastened together with tiny zip ties.

A .22 would solve the issue regarding all that extra money and freedom you have. AKA...it is a felony to shoot or harm raptors in the US. In other countries? No clue....

Use deer netting like this

Overlap it for added strength and security. a 7ft x 100ft roll for under $20 is a good deal.

You can also purchase chicken saddles, and paint onto them giant Owl eyes.....owls being the primary predator of hawks.

I could paint better owl eyes than that....

Two options:

  • Deer Netting is cheap and light. The deer can't see it, try to walk in, and meet resistance so they go away. This worked for me for about 6 months with a garden in a high deer area. It's still up 2 years later, but I got it caught in a few branches and tore the hell out of it.
  • Deer Fencing is much stronger and works by the same concept: deer don't see it, hit it, and can't figure out what's up so they go away. Price is more, but it's much more durable.

It's a nylon mesh. Very large squares (I'd say around 1" x 1") with fine nylon threads. I was worried that the squirrels/birds would reach in, but they haven't been able to figure it out. Something like this:
