Those halogen lamps must be super hot and eating up energy. Can they be swapped out for fixtures that can use LEDs or at least CFLs? Habitat ReStore probably has tones of boob lights, I'm trying to figure out if we can stand to leave them open (remove glass shade) to use LEDs. Ugly but efficient. I can always put them back on if we have houseguests.
Check the energy usage of your water heater and refrig, maybe your oven. Compare to current energy-efficient models. I'd be surprised if your refrig, at least, isn't worth replacing.
As /u/mrbigshot says, check the water heater. Insulate it (water heater blanket) and the hot water pipe going out (black split-foam insulation). Draining and flushing build-up can help. Build-up is like gravel insulating the heating coil, which causes it to overwork ($) and in time will damage it ($$). Be sure to check for rust, corrosion, and leaks-- 20 years is an old water heater and a leak can be catastrophic.
Our home energy inspector mentioned that newer furnaces are much more energy efficient. 20 years old for all of that sounds like a big investment is inevitable... check with your power company for rebates.
Those windows sound amazing. Hate to block the view, but I'd try thermal blocking curtains. We used them in the tropics and they drop the temp a few degrees immediately. If you buy from WalMart, you can probably try them and return them if they don't work for you.
You can also make your own: DIY version. Be careful on insulated windows, if it traps heat in the window, it can damage the seal. In the winter, reversing (shiny-side in) them may help retain warmth in the house.
If you have wind and sliders, can you cool and ventilate naturally instead of using AC? I'm thinking of growing corn or tomatoes next year on the south side of our new home, not so much for the food, just want some fast shade!
Came in to say this. I've been looking for thick blackout curtains on a small budget lately and the best I've been able to come up with are liners like the ones above. You can find them on Amazon as well. It's even better than having a black/dark curtain because it will absorb even less heat from the sun as white will bounce back a LOT of IR light.
Edit: There are also curtain rods that come with two rails, to hang sheer curtains between the window and the thicker curtains. You can use that to have two sets. White curtains and the whatever other color you want.
You can get blackout curtains in different colors. You can also make your own by attaching something like THIS to the back.
Right now those curtains are such a heavy block of dark color in an otherwise light room.
