Aquaman...

ZING!

But no seriously if I had to speculate.... hmmm.... Maybe a "first issues anthology" similar to what Marvel does in it's "Essential" series? Y'know collects every comic from the beginning up unto a specific point, and then you buy vol. 2. Really learn the fundamentals and etc. of a character/group.

RELEVAAAAAANCE!

Why not start with the classic that started it all - the start of the New X-Men - http://www.amazon.com/Essential-X-Men-TPB-New-Printing/dp/0785123768

You can see where and how the majority of the X-men you know were introduced, with the exception of the classic X-Men.

Sorta... and depends. http://www.amazon.com/Essential-X-Men-Vol-Marvel-Essentials/dp/0785123768 That Essential XMen is 26 comics, $36. Omnibus are the most affordable way to collect full runs, most of the time, but they are WAY expensive... and sort of weird to read. I traveled with one.. once. Never again. LOL If I am not mistaken, the single most affordable way to read everything is the digital marvel pass, but I don't like reading off a tablet or computer.

When I get through a bunch of other stuff, I will check out those essential runs... but I agree with your overall point.... collecting any full runs from Marvel quickly goes from hobby to money pit. lol

I started with the first New Mutants run, which was great. Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is a good place to start too. A lot of the early Claremont stuff is great too. Something I always loved was the Essential books, they contain a ton of stories and are part of what first got me into X-Men

Pick up

  • Essential X-men Volumes 1-3 - These Black and White trade papers back reprints every issue and annual between 1975-1982ish. Almost all of Modern X-men mythos started in this period and every writer attempts to make a connection to it.

  • Grant Morrison's run of "New X-men" ought to bring you into the new Millennium.

Everyone else seems to have covered the more recent series.

I've been trying to get back into X-Men myself in last year or so. I find that I like collections better than single issues. More of the story, less waiting!

Like this.

I will admit that I instinctively check the wikis, but it is always good to have some first hand knowledge.

I like to think that there are two approaches you can take to reading comics:

  • The casual approach: pick some arcs that look interesting to you and read them, just to see if you like reading comics.

I know it sounds old fashion but you should try your local library. They'll probably have a lot of comics you can read in collected editions and volumes. And you can't go wrong reading the original sixties comics like this, this and this, so that when those "X character wasn't like this originally!" arguments, you'll be able to chime in.

  • The canonical approach: if you want to know exactly what's going on in marvel and why, your starting point should at least be Avengers: Disassembled, or New Avengers Vol. 1, because while neither of them are award winning they set the stage for the modern era. However if you don't want to start there this handy guide tells you where to start from.

Also I should note that you should get a marvel unlimited subscription. You'll save a ton.
