It's a good idea that can be better executed.

I liked this so I bought the book. I also own a kick ass Excalibur. dehydrator that has already paid for itself. It's an investment, but worth it in the long run.

So if you get all the way into it, it can save a considerable amount of money. The dehydrator paid for itself on the savings just from making my own jerky.

Not at all. Just use the fruit roll sheets instead of the standard tray so there's no drip, or you can use parchment paper on the standard tray. Periodically just break apart the chili and flip it and voila, no mess. This is the dehydrator I use. I think it's a great starter kit for people who want to try dehydrating but don't want to invest in an Excalibur.

If you're looking to just do jerky, I ordered this one (note it's a dehydrator instead of a smoker, but all I use it for is jerky and it does awesome) about a year or so ago and have been extremely happy with it.

I use something like this on amazon

You spread out the chilli in a thin layer then let the machine do its work. I have heard of some diy dehydrators, that may be a more economical choice.

This is what I was working with

This is what I have now

The Nesco one worked just fine. I didn't get a chance to try fruit on it before I freaked out and bought the big mamma jamma.

Woot had a deal on this one for $189.99 a month ago. I have had good luck with amazon warehouse deals and they have the same warrantys. Looks like they have one new with just damaged packaging with means the package got damaged and returned but the product is in new condition for $208.79 with prime shipping.

I live in Texas and it can cost a bit to even make your own. You got me curious on the habanero idea. May have to try it.

Here's the beast my folks got me.

I recommend getting one of the square dehydrators that have removable racks, no modification needed. I picked up one of these for $50 off facebook. Look hard enough and you will find one. I'm sure there are cheaper ones as well.

Jerky is kinda time-consuming, but ridiculously easy.

I use a meat slicer and a fairly expensive dehydrator, but a sharp knife and warm oven will do the job, too.
(The oven is a bit of a hassle, though, so I would recommend a reasonably-priced dehydrator. The square-shaped models are more useful than round.)

I used Alton Brown's box fan & furnace filter method for a while, but it just takes sooo long. Even in my hot garage, it could take four or five days of drying, and I simply do not have that kind of patience where jerky is concerned.

Go $215 and buy the best...the Excaliber You won't be disappointed.

As long as your dehydrator has a fan you should be fine. That one seems to have good reviews. Even if it doesn't work as good it's only going to take longer to dehydrate. It's not like it won't work.

Mine is here

The grand daddy of home dehydrators is the Excalibur. I'm waiting for mine to break but it's still going.

Good to know.

I have a Excalibur 9-tray dehydrator. It's great. Good temp and timer controls - not digital though.
