It depends on the pill. Some aren't coated and tend to crumble. This is the cutter I use and it still takes some care to get a fairly even split:

Looks like they're out of stock on that one, but the orange piece slides to help lock the pill in place and helps you visualize where the cut is going to fall. This one looks similar:
