I wrote a grad paper (MPA student) on this topic a few semesters ago. There were a couple of really good sources I used and I'll post them when I get the chance. One was a book/blog by the author, and the other was a meta-study.

Edit: Here they are:

>
> "Do Economists Reach a Conclusion on Subsidies
> for Sports Franchises, Stadiums, and
> Mega-Events?" by Dennis Coates & Brad R. Humphreys

John Oliver's piece on stadiums is also a good watch.

They can't leave quick enough. I'm not a fan of publicly supporting stadiums and their owner's personal wealth.

worth a read.

Yeah, according to pretty much every urban planner and economist, stadiums SEEM to be horrible public investments. But I guess a some kid in college knows best. It's quite well documented:

If stadiums attracted businesses (as you say) then the area around the Joe would be an awesome neighborhood full of business, which it's pretty much never been. No one moves to a city because of a stadium. They move there because of good transportation, infrastructure, schools, low crime and twenty other reasons before a stadium (which you already have, mind you).
