One thing good headphones have helped me notice is how terrible the sound quality is on most cell phones. With that in mind, I'm set on finding an affordable high-def MP3 player, too. I'm currently looking at the Fiio X1, although I'm also tempted by the more luxurious Pono, although that is more than twice what the Fiio with a headphone amp would be. I'm too lazy to curate lossless tracks for all of my songs, so I'll probably just go with the Fiio in the end with a 128 gig SD card.
Sorry to hear that your listening experience has been handicapped like that. What have you tried to attenuate it? I occasionally get tinnitus from certain drug combinations, often involving piracetam, but it's never been something that could distract me from music or anything like that. Was there a clear cause of it?

I pretty much restrict my use to Maximum Fun podcasts at the moment, I use an MP3 player that is not an Ipod to listen to stuff. Not too sure how to add podcasts other than raw mp3 files to my player.
