I personally like the Neptune Finis, but the Waterfi iPod shuffle was a great (and durable) player you could use in and out of the water -- if you get aftermarket headphones (I've had luck with these: http://www.amazon.com/Hydroharmony-Waterproof-Headphones-Model-HH-01/dp/B00F4LRX3W/ ).

I used this for a while. It worked well, but you should be aware of two caveats, though.

  • If you push off the wall hard enough, it'll pull the speakers away from your cheeks.

  • You might be surprised at how disruptive music is to your swimming. It came as a total shock to me that I was annoyed by having music play while I swam. It threw me off in all kinds of ways.

I listen to podcasts while swimming using these.

I like that there isn't anything in my ears and I can still hear what is going on around me.
