Merry Christmas/God Jul/Hyvää Joulua!
This is actually quite common, this phenomenon is known as "Language Attrition":
>Language attrition is the loss of a first or second language or a portion of that language. Speakers who routinely speak more than one language may use their languages in ways slightly different from a single language speaker, or a monolingual. The knowledge of one language may interfere with the correct production or understanding of another.
Which seems to be what you're experiencing with Finnish, especially if your immersed in Swedish culture the majority of the time with school, the media, friends, family (even though you also said the speak finnish) etc.
To combat this I suggest attempting Finnish as if you were a novice...
Books:
Or if it's not too hard you could try something like "Suomen Sujuvaksi" or "Tarkista tästä!" Where Finnish is taught in Finnish, that might or might not help.
Hopefully this helps :)
The first two are great grammar resources that will be really useful for understanding the ins-and-outs of the language, and Tarkista Tästä will be invaluable for learning the rections (case governance) of loads of words - over 1200 I think. Teach Yourself Finnish is pretty good, but it's quite limited in my opinion - it's definitely formatted better than the others I've mentioned because it's set out like a course, even though the others are excellent on their own. There's also loads of online-resources (including those books...) that will really help your studies. Good luck and have fun! :)
Fred Karlsson's Finnish: An Essential Grammar is good, but it is 1) about grammar and 2) quite complicated.
It may not be the sort of thing to start out with, but as you progress it will answer a lot of questions you will have.
Thanks! How long have you been speaking it? Finns used to hold their hands over their ears when I would aspirate Finnish stops, so your accent will definitely improve with practice.
I wasn't able to study it much before moving here, since, as you might imagine, there aren't many Finnish courses offered in the USA. I did read some of this book, though. I recommend it for anyone who speaks English and is looking to learn Finnish. It's a really nice overview. :)
