Totally agree. We got this fisher price toy piano (Amazon link, not an affiliate link) and it has been the best music toy I have ever seen for kids. All of the notes are in tune and there are settings where the keys make normal piano sounds and where they trigger a recorded voice (on pitch!) that sings in solfedge. I wish it had more than one octave and that it played any notes outside of the C Major scale, but it's still very good. We also keep a cheap normal electric keyboard plugged in nearby so we can play together sometimes, and the kids sometimes play on it too.

Ours has survived 3 kids and my almost 5-year old (the oldest) still uses it. She plays music along with me and can pick out tunes from nursery rhymes on the keyboard or vocally using fixed-Do solfedge. I've only needed to change the batteries twice. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I would also advise you to stay away from instruments that can't be tuned (unless they are already on pitch and cannot lose it) or instruments that won't hold pitch long unless you plan to retune frequently. Examples of instruments that frequently have these problems include: recorders, harmonicas, whistles, ukuleles, and xylophones (that doesn't mean these are automatically bad, just that these instruments have a high percentage of poorly performing products for kids). Cheap pianos toys also frequently have a number of problems.

Cheap and toy instruments vary dramatically. If you know a lot about music, check before you buy. If you don't, avoid them or enlist a trusted advisor.

Sorry but I have no idea what's the best thing to gift to a 1 yr old. Toys comes into mind but there are so many of them that recommending any 1 would not be possible. Anyway I did some Google search, read a few articles, checked out the reviews and selected these 5

Our 2 year old boy loves books and anything that plays music. The Fisher Price Baby Grand Piano is a big hit at our house.
