They're ridiculous. I'd also like to advocate for easier-to-open lidocaine patches.

However, as long as we're on the topic, I'll plug my favorite badge accessory . They're so handy for stuff like this, I hate carrying stuff in my pockets.

I've got a pair of Fiskars Folding Scissors. They weight around 15g (or 0.52oz). Very happy with it.

In the US you can fly with scissors shorter than 4". I've flown with these scissors more than once and never had a problem. And fortunately they are very cheap so if I had to toss them it wouldn't be too bad.

I use these folding scissors when I travel

Is true.

Edit: For some reason the circular cutters aren't ok, but these are.

I prefer to carry EMT shears, they're already blunted so I just use a couple of inches of velcro cable wrap or a twist tie through the handles to hold them closed. Tape works too, but gets gooey.

Some other ideas off the top of my head:

  • The cap from a USB stick.
  • A couple of pieces of thin leather stitched together (I do leatherwork so maybe I'm biased)
  • Cram them into a straw large enough to fit them with some friction.
  • Cram them into the cut down body of a pen or similar tube. Maybe the lid of a pen?
  • Shrink wrap (I bet you could use a thicker variety and get it to retain the shape.
  • Two pieces of any thin plastic (like from a clamshell package, say) sized around the blades and taped together. (Cereal box cardboard, too.)
  • Buy scissors that have a guard included. (The example that comes to mind is not UL but they're awesome beefy scissors anyway)
  • Sugru. (Stuff's awesome)
  • Pick scissors that fold up into their own handles (though it can be hard to find a good quality pair. Looks like Fiskars and Singer have folding scissors on Amazon.)
  • Kydex, if you know someone that works with it or are willing to learn.

I had no issues a year ago on my last flight. They do sell specific TSA approved scissors if you are concerned. I have these ones (they're also super handy to fold up and keep in the pencil case I keep all my books in)
