For some it does indeed act as a kind of addiction, with compulsive behaviors that go on even in the face of evidence that the behavior is doing harm.

Most people seem to be "addicted" to carbohydrates, and that is likely because we were not exposed to them in the distant past and our bodies were "programmed" to assimilate them immediately whenever we DID come across them (berries in season, grass seeds in season, etc).

"My name is Steve and I am a carbohydrate addict"
"HELLO STEVE!"

I am hopelessly addicted to carbs myself...before I went on Vinnie Tortorich's program, the last straw was when I ate a whole bag of Heath Bars in one sitting. This pile of wrappers kept getting bigger and bigger and my reflux was kicking in and I felt bloated and stupid...yet I couldn't stop myself. After a week on a low glycemic index diet (think Vinnie, or SugarBusters, which is more liberal), my craving for sugar went away...in fact, I've developed an aversion to it.

Consider going to a meeting...yes, there are meetings for food addicts as well, and some people find this very helpful. http://www.oa.org

The author is Vinnie Tortorich, and I think this is the book they've all been referring to.

low carb, low sugar. i'm reading this and giving it a shot. The book has a little to much fluff (personal stories/anecdotes), but it's a good read and the science is solid. ask me again in a year how it goes, lol.
