Hey there! Sorry for the delayed reply! Here are the cameras I use. I was using the app to connect to them.
An affordable solution that works fine:

There are better, more expensive but this will work.
If you call them they'll set up the computer side for you.

720p with night vision and the camera rotates for $70. Its worth spending a few bucks for reliability.
This is similar to what I did. On my Rasberry Pi, I installed Motion to have it upload a picture from my Foscam to my Dropbox whenever motion is detected. I also included a notification to display with the CCTV plugin for Kodi which gives a little 640x480 window in the corner of my TV whenever someone is within frame of the camera.
Great resolution, and it's this one...

And it's actually now only 60, so even better. There's a guy on YouTube who does reviews of all their cameras, you can check out their capabilities (awkwardhamster)
We have a wifi home security camera (it's a Foscam, I will try to add the link on mobile) from Amazon that can be viewed on any mobile device with the app or from a web browser. I got it when my dog was a puppy so I could check on her from work. You can rotate the camera something like 270 degrees, it has two way audio (have to trigger to talk through it) and infrared for nighttime viewing. You can also snap screenshots or record video, and set it up to start recording if there's motion. I think it was like $70?
You have to log in with two passwords and it's not accessible outside our home wifi so my Army husband feels confident in the security. He may change it when we goes back to work from paternity leave, we'll see.
We plan to mostly use an old iPhone with a docking station to view with, but i can use my bigger iPad or laptop screen if I want.
Edit: here's the new version of what we have! Comes in HD now.

You can configure it to email you when motion is triggered at no additional cost. It requires power, wireless internet and an email account (Gmail works well). Add that email address to your phone, assign a ringtone when the email comes in.
The next day wherever you are - your phone goes off with a "ding" you see a picture of people on your porch and call the police to run them off.
Total cost: $70
No monthly fee (other than the wireless internet/electricity that you are already paying).
FYI OP, I have an older model. The newer model is linked below, for the price I bought it at.

If you're really concerned about it buy this:

Set it to alert on motion and put it at the top of the stairs. Boom, done.
I have a [Foscam] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H3Q8QB4/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_cH44wb4CSNS0K) wifi camera. You can view video over the internet, and set it up to alert you (via email) if it detects motion. You can even rotate the camera from your phone over the internet to look around. You can set up when to record video, and where to store it (onboard sd card, or network storage. It's pretty neat, tons of features for the price.
You're gonna have a tough time finding battery operated cameras, outside of hunting stuff. I recently bought these, they're IR, motion activated, use an SD card, but need an outlet.

This is a great camera with awesome low light IR vision.
You're better off just buying a purpose-built camera.
