The Navy NEETS Manuals are available free online and are pretty good. This is also good

Very true :-) You need Physics(Electricity & Magnetism), Circuit Theory (abstraction) and Maths (quantification) all of which come together in "Electronics". PEFI is NOT a "theory" book and you need to pair it with a good textbook. I recommend Foundations of Analog and Digital Electronic Circuits There is also a online course using it.

MIT currently offering an introduction to circuits and electronics free on the internet. The book that goes with the course is very good at describing the link between physics and EE.
