There's a Fourth World omnibus coming out later this year containing all the Kirby stuff https://www.amazon.com/Fourth-World-Jack-Kirby-Omnibus/dp/1401274757/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1502561621&sr=1-1&keywords=new+gods+omnibus
> So you can't even reference a specific story? Gotcha.
I'm referencing the entire body of work that makes up Jack Kirby's Fourth World omnibus. It consisted the Forever People, New Gods and Mr Miracle series Kirby wrote in the early 1970s. This is it, right here.. Look, you can buy it on Amazon.
How is that difficult to figure out? It's a massive sprawling work which constitutes those three series.
> You can undermine it all you want, but Thanos' relationship with Death is complex and facets of it are thoroughly in Infinity Gauntlet.
Not really. It boils down to Thanos showing off his power, dicking around and Death going "lol, nah". Then Nebula gets the gauntlet and the story ends on something of a whimper.
Plus, Starlin has a way of throwing dozens of characters into a story and making only 3 or 4 truly relevant. Gauntlet and War particularly are really stories about Adam Warlock and Thanos, with other characters just sort of...there. Compare that to Kirby who crafted an entire mythos out of his own mind full of imaginative characters.
> I've never seen anything like it in Kirby's stories, which dramas based around stopping the evildoer and nothing more.
I'm going to venture a guess and say you've never read anything Kirby has ever written.

The amazon.com description of the omnibus mentions the 1-18 issues of Mister Miracle, so this is probably a mistake (or amazon is wrong):

What am I missing?
The New Gods are entity's that live outside of the multiverse. The two warring factions are New Genesis (lead by Highfather) and Apokolips (ruled by Darksied). Darksied is suppose to be this representation of absolute evil and his efforts are ceaseless to enforce his will upon the universe. (You will know more about his search for the Anti-Life Equation when you read Jack Kirby's New Gods run.)
The characters of New Gods are another selling point for me. Every one of these characters have strong motives and are all larger than life. They really do rub off on you. Even the villains.
Now if you are serious about getting into the New Gods, you can start reading Jack Kirby's run https://www.amazon.com/Fourth-World-Jack-Kirby-Omnibus/dp/1401274757/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=New+Gods+omnibus&qid=1559259260&s=gateway&sr=8-1
Do note that his dialogue may take some time getting use to but when you fully grasp that this is suppose to read like a dramatic space opera, you then get to appreciate the fun and somewhat absurdity of it all.
After reading Jack Kirby's run, I would recommend that you read Mark Evanier's 28 issue run. In my opinion, He and only a few other writers really understand how you're suppose to write New Gods. Plus, Mark Evanier was actually an understudy of Jack Kirby for some time. The only unfortunate thing is that Evanier's run isn't collected in trade paperback so you have to buy each issue of his run individually on comixology.
Now regarding Tom King's Mister Miracle run, It doesn't really do anything to add to the world of New Gods. Tom King writes everybody very out of character and fails to uphold their motives and beliefs that Jack Kirby set in place as a blueprint all those years ago. I'm not saying I dislike Tom King as a writer because he has definitely written things that I've enjoyed (Omega Men). But my point is that I dont think Tom King is a suitable writer for the New Gods movie. King has more of a grounded style of writing which is completely the opposite of what New Gods is suppose to be. They are grand, awe-inspiring !
Have fun delving into the world of New Gods.

They are reprinting it!
Imo, the best comics you'll ever read! The Fourth World Omnibus will be perfect for you.
Also, most people don't know this, but Super Powers vol 2 spins directly out of that and serves as a nice epilogue to this whole epic.
