I have a '14 cruze and it had a press on shift knob. I used a set of channel locks to get the shift knob off along with a whole lot of brute force. It is an absolute bitch to get off if you have the press on style knob. I used a 12×1.25mm die to thread the shifter. I would imagine your buddy's is sized similarly.
