F that N. I'm a subscriber of Jeff Galloway's methods of very regular walk breaks. Basically you walk for a minute either every X minutes or every Y miles. You do this even in races. Why? Because walking and running use similar but different muscles, so when you walk you are giving your running muscles much needed time off. This also means you aren't putting a constant strain on them. This means you can keep up a much more consistent pace throughout your entire run.

Most people on a long run will "run out of gas" on the last few miles. They will "hit the wall," and have to really push through it. Then there is the guy who has been walking every few miles. Sure, when he is walking he is losing speed, but because he has rested he can keep up a brisker speed than most when he is running. Plus, at the end, he still has plenty of energy in reserve to power through the end.

I highly recommend checking out his books, especially:

I have a copy of Galloway's Book on Running and there's a chapter in there on running for women. Apparently women were historically told that running would make their uterus fall out! Sounds like there's a lot of batshit crazy myths about running for women out there.

Jeff Galloway has two books that have a year-long plan. I'm following the first edition- it's got week by week plans that are stratified by your experience/fitness level, speed training tips, and injury prevention/treatment advice.
