My time to shine.

Tips from a veteran rare breed chicken egg farmer for 11 years and over 300 chickens+ year round:

Haven't read all comments so forgive me if I repeat some tips.

Right now, those chickens are just fine space wise. But, as time goes on, they will need more room than the "other run." Those chickens will take so many dirt bathes and scratch up the grass that I can almost guarantee the space will just be a dust bowl in a few weeks or months. Judging by the size of your yard, it seems you can expand. Obviously though, not my chickens, not my choice.

The lay boxes never really worked for us. Not the door part anyway. I would say go in the coop and get the eggs but it is too small for that. I say that because assuming your chickens will sit on their eggs, they will, they can sometimes be a bit fussy when getting them out from under the hen. With a door we found it didn't really help to reach in instead of be in. But as of now the coop is small, nothin wrong with that.

Cleaning shouldn't be too bad. Provided you have easy access to the far corners. Clean once every 1-2 weeks, otherwise you get layers of poop that don't smell bad on top, but once you dig in, good luck with that.

Invest in some chicken scratch. Chickens love chicken scratch. That's what we used as their kind of "treat." Makes them like you more if you give them some every time you tend them.

Collect eggs every day once the start laying. Yes, they are a few months off that, but still. Letting a hen sit on her eggs for extended periods of time makes the hen become too attached to the egg, making harder for you to collect them. Also, if you ever here lots of bawking and sqwaking (is that a word?) the hen(s) are probably laying an egg. That, or a predator has been spotted.

As others have said, reinforce the bottom 6-12 inches with small chicken wire and lay more bricks at the bottom to prevent digging.

Heat lamps are most likely necessary in the dead of winter, don't rely on insulation alone with that few chickens. Hell, I had 300+ in one (albeit large) coop and some could still die if heat lamps died in the night.

On the note of heat lamps, if you have them in the coop, secure them as tight as possible with no chance of them falling. Heat lamps can be very hot, as we found out. One night one fell and started heating up straw in the coop. Eventually the straw set on fire, we were lucky to catch it in time but still lost 4-5 chickens from inhaling to much smoke.

Don't be afraid to shoot any predator you see coming for the chickens. Since you are in a suburban area, a strong pellet gun would be ideal. Not some Red Rider BB gun, I mean VERY strong. Talking 1000+ FPS with .177 lead pellets. The Gamo Whisper Silent Cat is not a bad choice Scaring off predators by voice or something only works that one moment, they will just come back. Killing the predator means it will not come back. Just make sure its not someones pet when you shoot!

That's about all I can think of for now, good luck!

Hollow point pellets, aim for the lungs/heart.

If you get a lung shot they'll run for a bit before they drop. Track'em down or you'll be dealing with some stink.

Sorry.

Hornet

Silent Cat

They both claim to be good for hunting. The Silent Cat lists small game and pests specifically. I don't need to kill anything larger than a raccoon.

you're very confused, This air rifle shoots pellets at 1000-1200 ft/s while the ammo shoots at 420 ft/s, while its a heavier bullet its still a lot less powerful than an air rifle.

That said it still would probably kill a bird but not because airguns have no problem
