Garmin fit, and yeah I got a heart rate monitor along with the app.

Rant about the rant.

1 - He repeatedly talks about the 945 costing $150 more with the HR straps "you really need", yet that's the Tri-bundle. He compares those costs to his Suunto which came with the equivelent of the $21 Garmin hard strap.

2 - He compares apples to oranges WRT the FR 45 vs FR 35 by misrepresenting the FR35 price. The FR35 debuted at $200 and spent a long time there, and most of it's life at $170 or higher. CamelCamelCamel never forgets, but this youtuber apparently does.

The FR45 is unarguably much more than the 35 was, and it debuts at the identical price.

3 - The idea that the FR 10 "basicly did the same thing [as the FR35]" is ridiculous on its face. It was not introduced at $100 as he claims, it spent most it's life above $125. Yes, there is no longer a Garmin with GPS under $170, but those at $170 have optical HR, better battery life, smartwatch features, and some metrics like VO2max.

4 - Comparing a black on white single field screen to a white on black complex one is disingenuous at best. I have no trouble seeing 7 datafields on my Fenix (black on white) all the way from sunup to sunset.

5 - Nobody forces you to buy both the swimming HR straps with the 945. The watch comes without either if you like.

6 - None of the serious watches have a touchscreen. "You're paying for it" is a lie.

7 - "new watches don't actually do anything more" is a lie, so he qualifies it with "unless unless unless" IF YOU DON'T NEED THE FEATURES THEN THE FR945 ISN'T THE APPROPRIATE WATCH FOR YOU.

He's completely ignoring the fact that these Firstbeat metrics are for STRUCTURED TRAINING and trying to replace coaches for many athletes who want structured training. The alternative is coaches, subscription services, or (awesome but) complicated solutions like Golden Cheetah.

This whole rant so far boils down to "I see something shiny I don't need and I wish it was priced lower. It has more features than I personally value or need, but I still want it."

8 - He wants optical HR + Music, pace, distance. FR45, not FR945 is what he should be looking at.

9 - "2 or 3 or 400$ more". Bogus, none of the new ones are that much more expensive than their parents, not even the Spartan.

10 - FINALLY at the end he argues than people buy more watch than they need... at the 9 minute mark.

11 - He's wrong about having more data than the great 80's athletes. He is underestimating the data a coach and trainer who monitor your metrics provided these athletes. THAT is what the Firstbeat metrics he rails against are attempting to provide.

12 - The irony of saying "buy a coach" when for many people Firstbeat-guided structured training can replace a coach is hilarious.

If you already have the 500, I would really suggest getting a cheap HRM.

http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-10997-00-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B000UOD5QM

$36 for the hard strap really isn't a lot if you already bought the 500. You can then figure out your LTHR (there was a thread about it yesterday) and base your intervals of off that.

I rode 2 years without power or heart rate and my the largest gains I made were right after I finally bought a HRM. Having an idea of what training zone you are in is a much better gauge versus using perceived effort

u/xerberos · 8 pointsr/GarminFenix

I bought two (the older model) for about €5 each on a sale, and the first one still works fine. I actually prefer them to the new comfort ones, because I find they last longer. No external metal connectors that eventually have corrosion issues. In 2 years, I haven't had a single connection problem.

It's this one I'm talking about:

I bought this chest strap and have been very happy with it:

Garmin Heart Rate Monitor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UOD5QM?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

It supports ANT+, so it easily pairs with the PM5 and PM4.

u/poleman14 · 5 pointsr/pelotoncycle

I ended up getting one of the Garmin chest straps which pairs instantly with the bike and no complaints so far...although it was $16.99 when I bought it on Feb 3rd, so price seems to fluctuate a lot. Garmin on Amazon

To be honest, this strap isn't all that comfortable, but I'm used to it and it works well. The soft straps feel better, but I am cheap, so I'm sticking with this one for now.

You want to put it on quite tight, and if you slightly dampen the skin underneath with water you will get better results. When it's not tight enough, or your skin is very dry it tends to read the HR too high.

u/Anonymoosy · 3 pointsr/PUBATTLEGROUNDS

I use a basic Garmin HRM you can get on amazon and a generic ANT+ usb stick to pair it to the PC. Garmin sells a USB ANT+ stick, but its twice the price or more usually.

I had some issues at first pairing it to the PC, so you may consider just getting the garmin ANT+ stick instead of generic to maybe ensure easier pairing, especially if you find a good price. I googled around until I figured it out though.

EDIT: The HRM also works with a lot of phones and things like that, my setup with the USB stick is to use it on stream. I recommend reading a bit before buying, there are a few ways to set it up.

u/beardywi · 3 pointsr/Rowing

If you're going to only use it with a PM5 there's no reason to spend well over $60 on a Polar when you could spend $20 on this Garmin strap that does the same thing through ANT+ and (from my personal experience) will allow you to connect your phone at the same time.

u/velo33 · 3 pointsr/Velo

What kind of HRM is it? If it's a Garmin and using the soft strap, that's your issue. Solution: Buy the plastic hard strap like myself and everyone I know has done. Or spend hours on Google researching, then buy the cheapo plastic strap. http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-10997-00-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B000UOD5QM/ref=sr_sp-btf_title_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1383158761&sr=8-6&keywords=garmin+strap

>Do either of these chest straps work for the calculations or does it have to be the HRM run/tri.

They will all work just fine for lactate threshold. I have the Red HRM-Run, and this guy (which used to be $20 a year ago, but I think Garmin isn't making it anymore) and both have worked just fine to calculate lactate threshold.

In fact nearly all ANT+ chest straps will have the ability to provide data necessary for lactate threshold. For Firstbeat's Lactate Threshold measurements you need heart rate variability data and that's available from nearly all ANT+ heart straps (even non-Garmin ones). I bet this one will even work.

The red strap provides Running Dynamics data like:

  • Ground Contact Time
  • Vertical Oscillation
  • Cadence

These are cool, but obviously not the same as lactate threshold.

I got this one to go with my forerunner 230. Works great and I never notice it’s there. Haven’t had any problems with it

u/fizzierthunder · 2 pointsr/Rowing

I have used this one for ~2 months. Works great, no complaints. It was only $25 when i bought it, but if it needed replaced at $40, I wouldn't hesitate. That said, it's the only one I've ever used, so I don't have any basis for comparison. Good luck.

u/golden_light_above_u · 2 pointsr/pelotoncycle

I use a Garmin chest strap monitor: https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-10997-00-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B000UOD5QM/ref=sr_1_5

It's cheap, and it has been VERY reliable. I use a dab of electrode gel before every ride and I've never had a problem with it pairing or picking up my heartrate.

It seems like I get about 100 rides (plus a few road rides) per battery with it.

u/Mortifyinq · 2 pointsr/AdvancedRunning

Awesome, I wasn't sure if there were any better than what Garmin has for around the same price point or not. I was looking at this one and didn't see that one for some reason, but will definitely look into it. Thanks!

u/OrdinarySeesaw · 2 pointsr/pelotoncycle

We don't share because of all the sweat :)
I bought 3 of these $22 Garmins and they seem to work great.

Welcome here! I'll jump in on some of this....

I've worn Fitbits for several years - like 'em and think they're probably very good as pedometers and overall activity trackers during the day. But they really don't work well for strenuous exercise. The technology with the optical sensors simply doesn't react quickly enough to be accurate.

Much more accuracy with a chest strap heart rate monitor (I think gold standard) - my choice, a Wahoo tickr (https://www.amazon.com/Wahoo-TICKR-Monitor-iPhone-Android/dp/B00INQVYZ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496324625&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=heart+rate+monitor&psc=1). But I've used cheaper models in the past like this Garmin (https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-MAIN-61562-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B000UOD5QM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1496324625&sr=8-4&keywords=heart+rate+monitor) and they do fine. A lot of people seem to like the Scosche arm bands (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JQHTJS2/ref=twister_B00KWHQJJW?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1) - I can't speak to the accuracy of those compared to a chest strap.

Regardless of what you go with, you'll want accurate heart rate feedback to sync with your bike (Bluetooth and/or ANT+ connectivity). Unless they've changed things with the newer Fitbits, I don't believe your Fitbit will sync with the bike's Android tablet - you'll want your HR monitor to "transmit" to your tablet so you can follow your heart rate data/zones on the tablet as you ride. [One nice thing you've probably noticed tho - the bike now syncs/uploads your workouts to your Fitbit page - with accurate heart rate data from the bike assuming you're using an accurate HR monitor, so you don't have to log your workouts separately to Fitbit.]

Here's the mat that we use under our bike (https://www.amazon.com/SuperMats-P-V-C-Treadmills-Machine-2-5-Feet/dp/B004IJI7HW/ref=sr_1_1?s=sports-and-fitness&ie=UTF8&qid=1496325854&sr=1-1&keywords=supermats) - priced reasonable enough, and works fine. One note - if you're putting the bike on anything other than a hard surface (i.e. carpet), get a thick piece of plywood to go under the mat - really helps with stability.

I use Jaybirds and wouldn't ride without them, but there are much cheaper (and more expensive) options for Bluetooth earbuds. My wife doesn't like riding with earbuds and went with a small external speaker (https://www.amazon.com/SoundTorch-Generation-Bluetooth-Portable-Waterresistant/dp/B01GY84TFI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496325454&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=bluetooths+speakers&psc=1) that seems to put out pretty decent sound. Regardless of what you go with, you'll want to use something other than the speakers on the bike - they put out plenty of volume, but they're on the back of the tablet and sometimes the instructors sound "muffled" and can be hard to hear.

For what it's worth, my input.... ;-)

ps - Final thought on your concerns about moving the bike. Wheels are at the front, where most of the weight is with the flywheel and tablet, so I think you'll be fine - it's designed to be tipped at the front and wheeled into place.

u/mysequitur · 2 pointsr/cycling

I have this model of heart rate monitor.

It is ANT+, so if your phone is ANT+ compatible you can just monitor your HR through your phone during your workout. HR is a relatively good gauge for how hard you're working, much better than speed.

u/LicentiousLynx · 2 pointsr/cycling

I've never had much of a problem with the $35 Garmin HRM 1G. Reviewers say it chafes while you run, but it is fine for cycling.

Edit: it's ANT+ by the way

I had the same issue, I then ordered this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UOD5QM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

love it, no chaffing, no data spikes.
I also use electrode gel with it:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002CA8RQ/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

best thing I ever did for renewing my love for my Garmin.

Hello! I use a Garmin Heart Rate Monitor for nearly every stream. I'm not sure on the specific range, but it definitely works anywhere within the room I stream in. I've had 0 issues with it, and there are a couple of youtube videos on setting it up.

The easiest way to broadcast it on stream is to use Golden Cheetah. You can make the background transparent fairly easily in OBS, resize the number to how you like it, etc.

It requires two items to work. Currently one is on sale, but it should hopefully be around the 50 dollar budget. The two devices needed:

1: https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-010-10997-00-Heart-Rate-Monitor/dp/B000UOD5QM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1526286218&sr=8-4&keywords=garmin+heart+rate+monitor

2: https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-USB-Stick-Fitness-Devices/dp/B00CM381SQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1526286312&sr=1-3&keywords=garmin+ant

Also to anyone curious, the waistband is quite adjustable. I'm fairly tiny and its smallest setting is good for me, however it can expand quite a bit. It fits nicely under clothing, and is not intrusive.

As someone who uses a lot of heart rate monitors I can tell you that your Apple watch can be up to 10bpm off easy. Easy. If its not worn tight enough itll be off 5bpm, if the sensors wet thats 5bpm, watch slightly off center thats 5bpm off.

Not to mention when you look at your heart rate you will either see a high number and stress which raises it more, or see a low number and stress and now its a high number and you stress.

The only heart rate monitor you should trust are heart rate strap monitors and those still can be completely inaccurate if they arent kept soaking wet.

The only use the apple watch heart rate monitor is good for is knowing what general heart rate zone your in. Especially since times where you really want to know your heart rate during exercise wrist worn heart rate monitors can easily be 20% off. 160bpm is a heavy cardio zone and at 160 your wrist worn heart rate monitor can have a reading of 128-192bpm.

Proof This is my resting heart rate on my Garmin Vivosmart 3 (which has a heart rate sensor as accurate or more compared to the apple watch AFAIK) vs my Suunto Ambit 2. Shitty filter to make the Suunto easier to read because juggling keeping both the backlight on the suunto and the vivosmart from timing out and turning the display off and focusing the picture was a fucking ordeal.

That's the one I got, $18. It pairs to your watch and then it will show your hr, zone, vo2 max, etc on/ after runs
