I have the older version of the Garmin Vivoactive (the newer one tracks HR).

I'm sure there are a lot of differing opinions and great advice for these things but I really like the vivoactive for a lot of reasons, the main one being price. Other watches may do more but this one does the most for the price in my opinion. It's great for all the things you mentioned above. I don't have the new vivoactive hr but a friend does and they haven't had any problems with the hr monitor. Great battery life, notifications from my phone, not too many other bells and whistles though. Truly the only issue I've ever had with the thing is it will occasionally miss a 25 meter section of the pool, maybe 1/10 times I swim it will say I swam XX25 when I ended on the same wall and it should be in increments of 50. Never had it flake out on important swims though.

I got mine on ebay and was able to get the watch and HR strap for the price of just the watch. The newest model sells for $199 on amazon. [Here's a great review on the newest model] (https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2016/05/garmin-vivoactivehr-review.html), also in addition to the this sub, dcrainmaker's website is a great resource for gear reviews.

I posted it elsewhere in this thread, but my Garmin VivoActive gets ~18 days of battery life, has an always-on colored screen, is very thin, and has GPS if you want it. There is a newer version with heart rate monitoring that I bought my dad, and he loves his.

If you would like a multi-functional watch, I strongly recommend the Garmin Vivoactive HR. It has a really accurate golf app and provides support for a truckload of other functions. I am a fitness buff and bought it for that reason, but have used the golf feature a ton of times. Biggest downside is that is doesn't track distances and clubs used like GameGolf for example. Also, it's pretty utilitarian looking. But the value for what you get is probably tops in the fitness watch segment. Does everything well.

Someone posted the Garmin Vivoactive HR on /r/running yesterday. It's about $100 off.

I was really tempted because it seems to be a good running and overall fitness tracker but I really don't like how big it is and the way it'd look so I know I wouldn't wear it over my normal watch.

Kinda pricey but I've heard really great things about it!

/r/Garmin. Water-resistant enough to swim with.

I bought the Vivoactive HR about a month ago. It's not full on smart watch but it's not simply an activity tracker. I would say it's a great in between option. It gets push notifications and what not but no speaker or mic. There are some apps for it but nothing like a real app store.

I wanted something to track multiple sports, heart rate, and water proof. I also wanted the option to pair a chest strap heart rate monitor too. Finally, I didn't want it to be a monster on my wrist. Vivoactive HR does all those. Only thing I didn't like was the price. $250 is pretty steep.

Here's a review by Techy Agent. I like his reviews because he really puts devices through the paces with weight lifting, running, cycling, etc.

My personal advice for 1.

First focus on cardio, and build up your cardiovascular fitness. Later on once you're in decent shape, incorporate a ruck regiment.

The following is only my opinion,

[Cheap ruckpack] (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Z5F2LQG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

Buy yourself backpack with triple military style straps so you dont hurt your back, make sure you're properly strapped.

I wouldn't ruck with more than 10-20 pounds for your backs sake and safety, UNTIL you get closer to ship date and you starting to practice your 9 mil, 44 pounds.

Many guys say not to practice rucking at all to preserve your back.

I would first start just regular rucking, every two weeks.

First week take a small timed, non paced 2 mile ruck. You have a lot of time till you go in 1.5 years. So no need to push yourself very hard till you get closer to the date.

Two weeks later take another hike, 2 mile hike but this time try to push yourself for a better pace at least 20% faster.

Two weeks after that do another 2 miler, but 40% faster.

After that start your 3 mile regular timed, non paced ruck.

And so on and so forth, the whole point of it is to progressively get your body to increase distance, and then increase your pace.

It will take you 27 weeks to complete this, out of the 72 weeks weeks that are in 1.5 years.

To time yourself, and see your pace, you might need one of dem fancy watches.

Don't spend $200 on a replacement. They're $150 on Amazon. I can't say if it's normal or not, because the device I've had that long is the vivosmart and just short of 1 year.

DC Rainmaker just published his winter recommendation list and he called the Garmin vivoactive HR the best all-around road running watch.

> Road Running – Best All Arounder: Garmin Vivoactive HR

> Last year Garmin really nailed it with the Garmin FR230 and FR235 series, and those watches continue to be very solid. Especially for those that want a bit more customization and features like structured workouts. However, I think for those that are just looking for a great all-around running watch that can double-down in other workouts on the fly (i.e. swimming, cycling, and even stand-up paddle boarding), the Vivoactive HR that was introduced this past spring is really a better bet.

> The unit is about $80 cheaper than the FR235, which is somewhat funny since in many ways the Vivoactive HR has more features (both have optical HR). Where things differ though is that the FR235 has functions like structured workout support (the Vivoactive HR doesn’t), as well as VO2Max estimation (again, not on the Vivoactive HR). It also has deeper data page customization. But beyond those big ticket items, the Vivoactive HR is the winner.

At $169.99, I'd be all over it if I didn't already have an FR225.

If you want to justify spending that much, the Vivoactive HR is now a generation old so you can get them in that price range. Wearable as a watch. GPS for Running, Cycling, swimming, etc. HR monitor (wrist based so not 100% accurate, but better than nothing). I really like mine. Garmin will automatically sync to Strava as well.

You might want to consider Garmin if you're more sporty; they have a very nice line of GPS watches and trackers. Unfortunately, their app (though functional) leaves something to be desired. It's not as intuitive and user-friendly as Fitbit's. I like the Vivoactive HR, which is a little pricier than the Charge 2, but much more full-featured. Be aware, though, the screen is nowhere near as crisp and saturated/bright as it appears in the marketing pictures.

Misfit is also a good one to take a look at. They are currently discounting both their Shine and Flash models ($30 and $12, respectively), and they're functionally very similar to Fitbits and have a nice app, but they come at a fraction of the cost. If you're wondering whether or not you are really into the fitness tracker thing, these would be great, accurate units.

JDI developed the screen for Garmin and then they sold them to Pebble too. Check out Garmin's VivoActive HR (normally $250, marked down to $200 on Amazon for the holidays) if you're interested in an e-paper watch with an SDK (Garmin's ConnectIQ).

Garmin Vivoactive HR with the compatible cadence sensor (though I stuck it directly to my bike with double sided tape because I think the rubber bands look ugly).

The Garmin Vivoactive HR brands itself as no strap required... Are you sure you're thinking of this right product?
