You need special silicone but not necessarily the expensive aquarium stuff, you just need to be 100% sure that what you have is 100% silicone and only silicone (lots of companies put in fungicides but still call it 100%). Here is a good video and this is the specific type I've used in the past

GE silicone 1 is cheap. Alternatively, for such a big tank, you may want to use RTV rated silicone. Check out this thread it has some nice info. Not sure how much it will help without removing existing silicone. Not sure what the obvious reasons are for leaving it. Is it stocked? Or you just don't feel confident messing with such a big bowfront? Either way since it is on the outside and silicone is so cheap I'd say go for it if it makes you feel better!

GE Silicone I is safe to use but you have to let it cure 3+ days. You'd have to move the fish elsewhere in the meantime. A food-safe plastic tub (look for recycle number 2, 4, or 5) will do as long as it hasn't been exposed to chemicals or anything like that.
