Well you should really go seen an ophthalmologist for a check up at least once to make sure it's nothing serious. If it's just plain dry eye you still need to find the cause. Gunk in your eyes in the morning (stringy yellow, crusted over) could be bleph, conjunctivitis, allergies... different causes have different treatments.

If your eyes burn or sting frequently it's helpful to do warm compresses twice a day. Terry cloth in water as warm as you can tolerate over closed eyes for 5-10 mins. If it's bleph you need to do frequent lid hygiene with lid wipes and if it's dry eye syndrome you need to determine what kind it is because not all eyedrops are equal, some address insufficient lipids in your tear film and some are merely hyperosmolar; if it's autoimmune you'll need to consider restasis or another cyclosporine eyedrop. So my advice would be to see an ophth once for a screening (for peace of mind) and see what he/she says. Then if it's nothing serious you can just carry on treatments by yourself.

Oh, and they have moisture chamber goggles for people who can't fully close their lids but that looks so uncomfortable. A regular eyemask can help most people (I've tried but they end up on my floor cuz I toss and turn in bed), but most are designed so poorly they hurt my ears. These kao masks are so dang comfortable you could potentially just reuse/recycle them for night use and chuck them if they get old or dirty. Eye ointments are also recommended to prevent them drying out as you sleep.

Try this and wear a sleeping mask. It's possible your eyes are getting dried out causing irritation.

Tears aren't just water but also oils. You might have watery eyes without the proper lubrication of the oils.
