I recommend looking up a Gottman Institute trained therapist.

If you can't afford a therapist, the next best recommendation I've got is reading the book "Getting the Love You Want" with your partner, and working on the companion workbook together.

Also, childhood has a lot to do with it. Look at Bill O'Reilly's rant. The man had a troubled childhood, and women marry men like that because maybe their father was like that and they want to relive the past in order to slay their demons. Or maybe they marry the opposite of their father and their husband is too complacent.
Hence why people say in romantic relationships 'you complete me' - because they're being needy and dependent on another person for resolving childhood deficiencies. That's not a solid basis for anything.
Lots of problems result from not dealing with your childhood properly. That is probably the biggest problem with marriages - being unaware of the subconscious primitive "daddy-hurt-me-i-hurt-you" child-like brain.
This is a good book on that:

That should be required reading before getting into any relationship.
