Keep in mind I have not read Gone Girl or probably most of the results below:
With Gone Girl in mind, I googled "what to read next" because I know that there are book suggestion generators out there (Just couldn't remember the name of any!) - and got this list from What Should I Read Next.

I looked up 'Gillian Flynn's reading list' and got this List of books to read if you love Gillian Flynn.

Also, Girl on the Train by Paul Hawkins seems like a really popular suggestion when I Google 'Gone Girl' - though I have not read it.

Generally on the subject of finding books based on books I liked, I find it helpful to browse the other things people bought section of Amazon listing, or find out what your favorite author enjoys reading.

Edit Edit: I read your post again. I realized this post is probably not entirely what you are looking for, but books are such a personal thing, hopefully you'll find something useful. I've found the best way to find good books is to read everything.

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn
_____

Alright. This has been one of my favorite books since it came out. It's a story of love, suspense and intrigue, as well as fast-paced, devilishly dark, and an ingeniously plotted thriller. I love how the person on Amazon described it: "Gone Girl’s toxic mix of sharp-edged wit and deliciously chilling prose creates a nerve-fraying thriller that confounds you at every turn."

I can't even describe this book. It has so many twists and turns and the end will just blow your mind! I have never read a book like this in my life - it was just a page turner. I finished it in about two hours.

Even if you don't pick me, please read this book!

Plainsong by Kent Haruf is excellent.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is also excellent, but science fiction.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn is very good too.

I think 2 & 3 are going to be movies but nothing before May.

Honorable "already read them so I know they're good" mentions:

  • Libba Bray - The Diviners (telepathic teenagers come together to stop a serial killer who's come back from the dead to finish what he started).
  • Gillian Flynn - Gone Girl (a guy's wife disappears - did he do it? did she do it? who did it!? This one is a mindfuck that comes highly recommended).
  • Ernest Cline - Ready Player One (in the not-too-distant future, 1980's culture reigns supreme, and one boy goes on a quest to win a 80s-culture scavenger hunt and save himself from his awful circumstances).

I have no idea how to tell shipping on things marked prime, for non prime members.

Thanks for the contest :)

It's all about the karma.

This is basically the plot of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl. Which, incidentally, is also highly recommended! The first sentence of my comment is a slight spoiler, but not too much.

I don't want to win because I already have The Fault in Our Stars, but you should read Gone Girl. I really enjoyed that book and it's also coming out as movie in October 2014.
