you'd need to download a vr video player. several are on the various apps stores. These will automatically split 2d movies into 2 screens for viewing (not with 3d depth though) and will detect proper 3d sbs videos (and display them correctly).
You then need to find a cardboard player. anything from this to this. Just insert the phone and off you go.
GearVR and daydream are just really nice and polished cardboard players.

If you know for a fact that you don't need (or at least can't benefit from) glasses, and that your IPD is in a compatible range for a typical cardboard headset, then it is likely a problem with the product you purchased.

Having said that we've seen many people who didn't think they needed glasses visit optometrists and get prescriptions after their first encounter with fixed-focal length VR headsets.
An alternative to glasses (for people who need them, particularly if it's just to correct for myopia or hyperopia) is the purchase of a headset that provides a diopter (lens power) adjustment. And many such headsets offer IPD adjustments as well. If you go that route make sure you ask here first so we can warn you away from all the horrible ones :)
