Every hammock I've ever seen (and used) is packed away in the method you described. You basically bunch it up and stuff it in to the sack it came with. Takes no time.

I use a Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter which ran me about $100 Canadian. Here is a video of some dude packing it up.

they're just regular hammocks as far as i can tell - tie em to a tree and lie in it. you can probably buy them from sporting goods stores..? I haven't been in the US long enough to know what those are like, but that's where i'd look, that or Amazon. I'm sure there are some which are designed for 2, like this one here

I have 2 hammocks, a Grand Trunk Skeeter Beater for camping, and an ultralight one that stays in my backpack/bob. The Skeeter Beater is definitely more comfortable, but takes longer to set up (due to the ridgeline that holds up the bugnet).

The cheap one is good for naps or hanging out at work. I'd spend a night in it if I had to. Mostly in my bag for napping though. I also have an inflatable hiking pillow that works really well.

There are many shortcomings to hammocks though. You have to find somewhere to hang them, which sounds easy but can be hard sometimes. You get a cold butt without really warm temperatures (or an underquilt, or a sleeping bag). It takes a night or two to get used to sleeping in one, but holy hell is it better than the ground! You also need a rain-fly if it's going to be wet (which is a whole 'nother bag).

They're also useful for keeping the creepy crawlies off you.

I wouldn't use it for a primary long-term arrangement, but with proper planning they can make an effective system. 9 times out of 10 I'll reach for the hammock while loading up for a backpacking trip, and like I said I do carry one with me pretty much everywhere I go.

Another option to look into for BOB's/GHB's are simple Bivvy Bags. Smaller/lighter than a sleeping bag or hammock system, but still provide protection from the elements. Not great for sleeping in, but much better for surviving.

As a homeless Vet Id imagine you would have unique insight into living conditions.

Do you suppose a cheep hammock braced with tarp and insulated with emergency blanket would be a Useful temp shelter? Something like this

Im working with paracord to make a type of one with tarp, I need to test it, but I have no idea how well it would be to implement when homeless.

I was thinking of trying it on two chain link poles.

I really have no clue what I am going to do, but I know I can never buy another useless piece of crap product made in china, with out remembering every person that actually tried to help me. I just can never do that again, so I plan to do something.

I was even looking into portland camping laws (its okay on private property) I was thinking of hitting up all the local churches and asking them why those big lots are shut down at 3 am when people need warmth and shelter...

I got a Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter. It comes with a bugnet and suspensions. Setup was pretty easy but I found the straps that go around the trees aren't very long so I bought another pair of straps so I can use thicker trees. I'm looking for a tarp now in case it rains.

I believe that's a Skeeter Beater Pro from Grand Trunk. I've got one and absolutely love it.

I got this one. It's a Grand Trunk, and it's very nice. It has the built in netting like emmettfitz's, and can also be reversed if you don't want to use the netting. I've used it for an entire summer with practically no wear, but I do take care.

hammocks are actually amazing for your back! if you want to learn more I highly suggest going to /r/hammocks. Very friendly and active subreddit. If I were to suggest a cheap, easy, foolproof set up. i'd do this. Hammock, Straps, people may say go with the kammok roo python straps, but some parks are super choosy on what can be hung on their trees. And heres a tarp that regularly gets down to $20 on woot.com.

You like her rack? ;)

It's sort of like this one. It worked sorta, though I wouldn't reccomend it because loaded panniers will hang down and rub on your tire. And it will swivel around the post (A bolt through it will prevent that though)

As far as a weight capacity I have no idea. It held my ~25lbs of gear fine but I surely wouldn't sit on it.

I heard from several people that hammock camping is the way to go, but haven't tried it yet.

but you will still need a tarp for rainy conditions and those will run you about $60-70 like the kelty noah's tarp for instance.
