So I know this is very nice circlejerk on popcorn prices, but if I can ask a real question, how can I cheaply make movie theater quality popcorn at home? Because to the degree I love that shit, I'd be willing to sell my first and second born son for a bucket if they asked nicely.

so, editing as to help other popcorn lovers out there, and hopefully to acquire a few extra first born sons on the cheap.

What I have found is the cheapest machines are Great Northern Machines ($149) and Maxi-matic machines (139) for something similar to what a movie theater serves. For much cheaper, non movie theater looking devices, try air poppers, like these, which I can attest make some pretty damn good popcorn.

This is what I did:

I found the cabinet and counter by looking at clearanced and damaged cabinets at my local home builder store (Menards). The tiered candy tray was a summer planter thing we found at Hobby Lobby. I already had the small fridge. And I replaced the popcorn maker in the above picture with popcorn maker linked below for $130 from Amazon below. The original popcorn maker only made enough popcorn for 2 people which sucked. Below makes enough for 4 then some.

Yes, you can get it without the cart to cut the price in half. I use mine a couple of times a week. The popcorn is tasty, it really makes my home theater feel special (I have a little fridge with drinks and a shelf with boxed candy too), and it just needs to be wiped down with a wet cloth. I do have popcorn kernels in every corner of my room and couches though...

Yep! We just got one of these in black: it's amazing!

can you be more specific? do you mean like an air popper, or a machine like this one? I've seen these and they don't work very well - a lot of the kernels end up unpopped, it's wasteful, inefficient, cumbersome to fill, and hard to clean. I don't recommend it

I prefer to use my Whirly Pop - very high quality and easy to use. avoid the stainless steel ones as they heat up too slowly, aluminum conducts heat faster so it takes less time to pop.
