Just start painting your nails and you will figure out what works best for you eventually. I've compiled a list of helpful links/videos that I've found helpful for me.

Dotting Tools:

  • Cutepolish's video on how to make your own dotting tool.
  • <$2 on amazon. It might take a while to get to you if it's being shipped from China though.

    Stripping tape:

  • $1.08 on amazon.
The trick when you use stripping tape is to make sure your polish isn't old and too goopy, otherwise it will not be so crisp.
  • And use tweezers like this or this.

    Cleaning

  • You will get the hang of cleaning once you start practicing. If you get better at application you will have to do less cleaning. This will come with practice. I suck at doing nails with little mess. So I use acetone and a slanted brush. This might be a good set to get.
  • /u/ReneeJade 's post about cleaning up with toothpicks is very helpful too.

    Nail Polish Brands

  • This depends on how much money you want to spend. I started with Sinful Colors because no mula. But the formula is kinda bad and takes forever to dry. And Sinful Colors stain your nails really bad in my experience. Sally Hansen is pretty good for the price. I only just acquired a couple of China Glazes and Essie's. They are pretty good but I only buy it when it's less than $3. I don't have experiences with Orly, O.P.I.
  • Julep is okay in my opinion. Personally, I feel like they're not worth the price. One of my bottles just broke when I was turning the cap. And the other one (Julep Sasha) stained my nails really bad :/
  • There are nail polish programs like Julep Maven (who do a free first box with code FREEBOX) and other ones that I don't know about but head onto /r/BeautyBoxes to find out more.

    Top Coat and Base Coat

  • Orly bonder is a good base coat that I use. I don't have experiences with other ones, so I can't compare.
  • Getting a fast drying top coat is probably a good idea. I use Seche Vite but it has a really strong smell and it shrinks your polish. I'm trying to find a new one but Sally Hansen Insta Dry didn't work for me. It smudged my nail art even though it dries pretty fast. Poshe is supposed to be good but I don't have experience with it.

    Nail Strengthening

  • O.P.I. Nail envy is a lot of people's favorites but it didn't work for me personally. Just search this subreddit with "nail envy".
  • Quimica Alemana. This stuff has good reviews and I want to try it.

    Nail file

  • Use a crystal one. This one has good reviews or use an O.P.I. one. I use an O.P.I, pretty happy with it.

    Have fun painting!

Welcome to the group! If you're wanting to get started on some nail art designs, I would suggest ordering (or putting on your wishlist) some of the inexpensive tools like these or these. They take a while to ship, since they're both international orders, but they're really inexpensive. I have both sets and they're very nice :)

u/itsok_imapirate · 3 pointsr/Nailpolish

This is so sweet. She will cherish these memories when she get's older. My dad used to do my hair every morning before I went to school and those are still some of my fondest memories.

Now, on to nails. Sinful Colors is my main suggestion for polish for you. You can buy it at most drug stores (I've found it at CAVS and Walgreens), Target, and Walmart. It runs around $2 a bottle, sometimes only $1 when it's on sale. They have some really great colors and fun glitters. You can obviously invest in more expensive polish but they aren't completely necessary. Make sure that you are at least using a base coat to keep her nails from getting stained and a top coat if you want the polish to have some staying power.

If you're looking for tools I suggest picking them up on Amazon. I suggest dotting tools, tip guides, and small brushes for clean up and detailing to get yourself started.

YouTube is full of tutorials on how to do nails. I'll try to come back later and link you to some good looking tutorials.

Good luck!

Edit: you should also x-post to a more active polish subreddit if you want more replies. /r/redditlaqueristas, /r/randomactsofpolish and /r/PolishGauntlet are all really active.

u/thornwindfaerie · 3 pointsr/PolishGauntlet

Nail stuff is pretty broad but I'll see if I can help!

Dotting tools, striping tapes, rhinestones, and nail art brushes are great for her age bracket (and they have the added bonus of being super cheap!!)!

For a higher level of difficulty check out nail stampers with "plates". Here is a tutorial to show what those actually do, tutorial.

You know your kid better than I do, but at her age I would have loved a dedicated space for my "beauty supplies". Would a desk with a nail station be a welcome gift? If you live near an IKEA, get something like this and these for polish storage, each box fits 50 polishes easy! I would also get a desk lamp and some mason jars or whatever to hold the tools that are too big for the box. Maybe even a vanity mirror for when makeup becomes a thing. To keep the desktop clean and easily manageable I would get some cheap plastic place mats from the dollar tree.

Polish-wise, Sinful Colors is a cheap brand of polish found in most drug stores, usually around $2 a bottle, but the colors are nice and go on well (I own about 20 of them and use them often). For a person her age I probably wouldn't get too many of the more expensive brands like Essie on up, just because preferences are fleeting at that age. Eventually, you could dive into the deep scary world of independent polish makers (where all the pretty colors are!!)

u/ceairaraptor · 3 pointsr/RandomActsofMakeup

Just throwin this out there, but these brushes are only $2.62 shipped.

While they're not the best quality, they do a pretty good job. I've had mine for a little over a year and use them frequently.

I actually use some nail art brushes that I got from Amazon for like $3 for almost all of my detail designs. I'd totally recommend them if you're getting into more detail manis :)

You do want a brush that's on the stiffer side. You need it to keep its shape as you clean up, because when they fan out (as you know) you don't get the clean lines. I got this brush set and I started using one of the brushes that came with it until my friend picked me up a nicer one. The bristles or only about a 1/4" long, flat edge, and while you can bend the bristles it has a bit of resistance to it. Little things to look for.

Some brushes don't hold up well to the acetone. I see a lot of trial and error with most people, but a lot of the time it's the cheapiest brush out there that works for them. Now looking at that image, it's hard to tell how long the bristles are. Do you use the brush for anything else and would you be okay if you ruined it? You could trim it down with some sharp scissors (a little at a time) and see if that improves the bristles any. Generally the shorter the bristles, the more resistant they are to fanning out.
My brushes get hard after I use them to cleanup, too. It's just the lacquer residue and acetone making the bristles stiff as they dry. All you need to do is let it dry out and then smooth the bristles when you go to cleanup next. I just flick the bristles back and forth a couples of times and it softens right back up. Soaking the brush in water for any real length of time isn't good for brushes in general. Well, I'm speaking from a purely painting perspective that soaking in water for extended periods of time will wreck the ferrule and your bristles will go ape shit. If you want to wash the brush, just run it under some water, gently handling the bristles (no tugging or extreme bending), then flick the brush to get most of the water off of it. Then you can reshape the bristles into their original shape, getting the edges straight and such. As it dries, it'll hold its shape.

u/lindisty · 2 pointsr/RedditLaqueristas

get a small brush i use a small one from this set, some pure acetone nail polish remover, and a small container you never plan to use for anything else, like bent tupperware. You'll also want a paper towel or napkin.

do not use a plastic solo cup or anything, they melt when in contact with nail polish remover this is a huge mess, trust me.

Pour about a tablespoon (oops!) teaspoon of the nail polish remove into the container (hard plastic or glass!). Dip the brush in then tap it on the side so there's not a ton of remover in the brush. Gently brush across the polish on your skin, carefully not rubbing your nail. Every few strokes tap the brush onto the paper towel or napkin and some of the excess pigment will come off and not smear across your skin. If excess color bleeds around just do another pass with the brush.

If you want a REALLY easy clean-up, put a small layer of Vaseline, lotion, etc. around your nail (but not on it!) so the excess polish just wipes right off.

u/Dassshie · 2 pointsr/RedditLaqueristas

My boyfriend said I shouldn't, and I just topcoated. I think it looks super pretty without it still. :D Next mani definitely will require some Fairy Dust action!!

I just used my medium striper brush from this set and just did it slowly. Made sure that I did extra white white stripes, regular sized red stripes, and then itty bitty little diagonal red stripes. I am absolutely adoring the way it came out!

u/Queen_of_Tarts · 2 pointsr/RandomActsOfPolish

Hello, again!
Be sure to check out this blog (NOT MINE) for more inspiration! There isn't a single mani on that blog that I don't want to try to recreate.
Your manis are lovely. I can't believe you did the mushrooms with a toothpick! Imagine what you could do with some brushes and dotting tools. This set from your WL is very nice, but I can't find a seller who will ship to you. If you can help me find a seller who will ship internationally, I'd love to hook you up with some tools!
Also, pictures of these cats and beach are a must.

u/Kaewee · 2 pointsr/RedditLaqueristas

Let me say that it's so awesome that you are taking an interest in nails like this for your wife and kids. There should be billions more husband/dads out there like you! :)

First, this mani is awesome! I'm actually going to try this out myself. It's a great color combo!

As far as constructive criticism I would say clean up is what you should focus on next. The best way to do that is to get 100% pure acetone. Anything that says it has extra additives to help the skin, are nice, but they make clean up harder. Head to Sally's to get it, it's cheap.

Then order a set of brushes like this. I personally own this brush set and it rocks! Use the small angled brush to clean up her nails like this.

Then lather her hands up with moisturizer and offer her a nice hand massage while you are at it. She will love it! :D

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I <3 grammar so much!!

My mom always said that "Ain't ain't a word unless it's in the dictionary!!" (She was...and still is...a true Southern Grammar Queen.) She taught me well. I've slipped a lot, especially in the almost 16 years of marriage...darn husband that doesn't know grammar at all!...but I still heart it very much, and continue to patiently explain grammar to anyone who asks me to. The day that I showed her that ain't is most assuredly in the dictionary, she flipped out and finally agreed to let me use it. Before I showed it to her, she forbade me to use the word in her presence. I love the word ain't...probably because she doesn't, lol.

Oh, and if you happen to do a blog on this subject, you could add what the difference between 'its' and 'it's' is. People just don't get what the difference is a lot of the time. (Oh, and probably a lot and alot.)

I would love these if I win, please. They are actually for my husband so he can do nail art on my nails.

Thank you for the contest! :)

Its late at night, the wee hours, when I get the call. "It has started," the musky voice stutters, going weak at the end, no cadence. I turn to wake up my husband. Oh wait. He's gone. It's been a month since he passed, I am still not used to it. Remembering I am alone and there is no one here to protect or help me, I wonder if I should join the fight by volunteering, since I really have nothing left to live for. I might as well do something with my now empty life, and fighting for the country I love might just be it. No, I can't. I'd be useless in a war. I have no skills, no talent. It would be a waste of money for our already poor nation. I turn to start setting up to defend myself in the rather large house. I should at least try to save myself, one less dead body to clean up. I run up to the pathway and place the glow in the dark iPhone bumper cases and run back into the house. I figure this way I can see if anyone is sneaking up on me, for when someone walks past it, the light will disappear from my sight for a second. I know it might not help much, but my available resources aren't exactly that helpful. I next get out my Nail Art Painting Pen Brushes. They also might not help, but hey one of these looks pretty sharp. I might have to stab someone. I'm nervous of course, as my trembling hands clench the brush. It's not as if I love killing people. Strangely I'm not against it either. I am neutral. I'm neutral in most situations nowadays. Some might say I am disconnected. But that doesn't matter now. I need to prepare. I quickly grab my charger as a last resort. If all else fails, I can try to strangle them. I look out the window. I shed a tear as I cannot see my glow cases. I know what it means. I can hear the soldiers marching. I hear them coming, closer, closer, can hear there boots hitting the ground in complete unison, like thunder suddenly striking, again and again. The sound is getting louder and louder and now I can hear the screams and gunfire and the death. I remain so quiet, so quiet. I am emotionless. I am ready for them, and ready for my demise, to end it all, fighting.

You'll never take our FREEDOM! I know I got carried away a bit but I couldn't help it :3

I'M AWAKE! I VOLUNTEER!!

Good morning, darling. How are you this morning?

u/Greedily · 1 pointr/amiibo

It takes alot of patience. & Alot of Thin coats for me lol. I used this paint set from Amazon with a set of Nail Art Brushes which are super small and thin. My finished amiibo was Matte which is what I wanted. You'll have to decide if you want Matte or Glossy finish for your amiibo.

As for small mistakes like going over parts you didn't want paint on, I used 100% Acetone to clean off any stray paint. Use a small brush, dipped in acetone then lightly brushes against a paper towel to ensure no drippage, to get the excess paint off, Do not ever rub too hard or you'll risk ruining your amiibo. You can find 100% acetone online or at a Pharmacy/retailer near the nail polish items. I suggest this part if you plan on keeping some sort of original color to the amiibo EX: Toon Link's skin color.

Best of luck!

u/gweezer · 1 pointr/minipainting

Like, it seems, everyone else, that was my starter too. It's supremely useful for basic paints that you'll use on everything, blacks, greys, whites, and browns, but it had little else for specific details. (Which was probably the point). Mine came with a yellow, blue, and green that I don't like and have already replaced (except the yellow because I just don't use the color enough to need to). No red.

I'm personally not a fan of the paints themselves, though. They work for the fact that you don't have the money to buy all those browns and blacks individually, but they're too runny for my tastes, separate really easy and are hard to get back, and I just don't like dropper bottles. I feel like a lot of paint is wasted for the fact that I can't just drip my brush in when I just need it for one or two little details.

That said, I'm still using most of them. I bought my own paints for skin tones and bright colors. I use the GW Citadel paints, I know some people think they're too expensive, but they're over all better quality than most other paints I've tried.

When you first go to get extra paints, try something in a tub instead of with a dropper, see which one you like best. It took me a little getting used to the tubs, but I hate the droppers now.

As is said, you'll want better brushes. What I used for a long while is This They're not exactly great quality but they're better than most basic cheap sets you'll get at a craft store. The exceptional low price comes with a month long shipping time, though. Right now I'm trying out Army Painter brushes I got that set and the Character and Pshyco brushes. I only just bought them so I can't say anything myself, but I've heard good things.

One thing the kit doesn't even mention, if I remember right, is sealer. When I first started I tried to get a basic art acrylic sealer from a craft store, but it stayed forever sticky and destroyed the first few minis I painted, which was a huge disappointment. Your local game store should be able to show you what they use. I use the Citadel Purity Seal simply because it's all that local store had, I couldn't compare it to other spray sealers. It has a mate finish, and you have to be really careful to not over-coat or you'll loose detail.

I also have a little tub of Citadel 'ardcoat which is a high gloss sealer. I use it on top of the spray for a couple details, like anything wet or metal highlights, but in my experience anything glossy has been tacky, so use sparingly if you use at all.

u/kyrriah · 1 pointr/RedditLaqueristas

The cheapest place to get a lot of this is by search around on amazon, honestly. If I were you, I'd get a set of nail brushes instead of a whole set of striping polishes. Then you can use one bottle for multiple things. And here are some cheap, but good, dotting tools.

This is an add-on item, but it's the cheapest you're going to find orangewood sticks anywhere. You can also gets pearls and gems

Sanding blocks and nail files are pretty affordable at sally's. but if you can get into CosmoProf, it's even cheaper there. I believe a manicure bowl is also pretty cheap at Sally's.

Your biggest money sink will be nailpolish. There are some decent brands for fairly cheap, but overall....

u/Kittenmittons91 · 1 pointr/RandomActsOfPolish

I have this and have had good experiences with it. The striping brushes included are significantly thinner than brushes I've gotten in striping polishes, and I find them easier to work with (the striping polishes tend to give me really inconsistent lines). If you're looking for something more narrow, I would say buy a brush as opposed to a striping polish.

Edit: Then again, if they're only $1 it wouldn't hurt to try one out and see how you feel about it!

I'm not too sure about any nice stones (or gems) from Amazon, but as for nail polish, I'd get her CND Vinylux if she's using regular nail polish (if she's not sticking her hands in a light to dry.)
