I bought a crayola/G-U-M brand that's battery powered and shaped like a crayon. It's the small round type. My 1-year-old's dentist said just find the smallest one and make sure it has soft bristles.

I have always had a particularly sensitive tongue... and every mainstream toothpaste out there burns my mouth.
The toothpaste I've finally become loyal to is Tom's Mango Orange gel. It's a flouride toothpaste, and yes it does contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. It's been really a godsend for me, though.
I also think every parent should look into getting one of those cheap electric toothbrushes for their kids such as this one. It makes brushing one's teeth easy and efficient and fun.
