It really depends on what she wants to do with it. If she isn't really interested in attachments, then it doesn't have to be a Kitchenaid. Honestly, I think all the Kitchenaid mixers smaller than the Pro line are woefully underpowered and a waste of money for most people.

The Hamilton Beach Eclectrics line are comparable in performance except for the attachment hub. They're also all metal, which Kitchenaid used to be back when they were actually worth the amount you pay for them. Now Kitchenaids are full of plastic parts, and the Hamilton Beach costs half as much.

There's also a less powerful, but still pretty darn good Hamilton Beach stand mixer for around $100.

For under $50, your best bet is going to be a hand mixer that also has a stand. These will be the more classic double beater design as opposed to the more efficient planetary action you get on the higher end mixers, but certainly usable as long as she's not making huge batches of anything and understands the limits of the mixer's capabilities. There are several available on Amazon, this Sunbeam is similar to the one my mom had for many years.

The conventional wisdom may be that it's a Kitchenaid or nothing but I don't buy it. My mom has never owned a Kitchenaid in her life, and has never had a problem making whatever she wanted with her old fashioned Sunbeam double beater model with the spinning glass bowl. A smaller, lower end mixer will mean she can't make double and triple batches of most things, and some tasks will take longer, but that doesn't mean cheaper mixers are useless.

This Hamilton Beach standing mixer is only $75.99 on amazon and has some pretty good reviews for being a budget mixer. Its bowl size is a little smaller though.

Also PSA - If you want a Kitchen Aid for a fraction of the Price, Hamilton Beach makes a mixer around ~$65 that does everything a Kitchen Aid does. We've been happy with this model.
