Hellboy isn't like most superhero comics where there's multiple "runs" to keep track of. Nearly all of it is written by Mike Mignola and nearly all of it is worth reading. Just start at the beginning with Hellboy, Volume 1: Seed of Destruction and follow the rest in suggested reading order.

A good place to start is Seed of Destruction, the first volume of Hellboy. I believe there’s only like 13 volumes of Hellboy all told. It’s one of those creator-owned stories that gets a new issue whenever Mignola feels like doing one so 23 years or so only amounts to that much comic...

There are omnibus collections though if you would rather have like 4 phone books instead of 13 TPBs. To make it more confusing, the Omnibus is in chronological order of Hellboy’s life instead of in order of publication... But you can either start with Omnibus 1, which is called Seed of Destruction :

Or Trade Paperback 1, also called Seed of Destruction :

Nice! You're welcome :)

If you're not reading digital and money isn't an issue, get the oversized library editions!

If you want to go cheaper, either get the TPB (just start with Hellboy Vol 1: Seed of Destruction) or, if waiting is not a problem, they're re-releasing the whole series as omnibuses starting in may (4 consecutive volumes and 2 short story collections). That should be the most cost effective option to get the whole story.

Introduction to Comics

How to Get Into Comic Books (13:40) | Patrick Willems

Consider your intent/commitment. Think about your favorite shows, movies, books, etc. Reading primarily for enjoyment or encyclopedic knowledge? Collecting? Have the time/resources to read 50 or 500 comics per character?

Don’t try to read everything at once. There’s too much. Forget about catching up, continuity, universes, etc. for now. Older comics can be an acquired taste for modern audiences, so they aren’t necessarily ideal starting points. Writers change often, characters get re-worked, and origins are re-told. Remember, there are many great characters, creators, publishers, etc. to explore.

Pick an interesting character/team and seek their most popular/acclaimed stories. Focus on self-contained, complete stories in one corner of the universe. There will be unexplained references/characters, just persevere or Wiki. Don’t let the tangled web of shared-universe comics overwhelm you. Think of it like solving a jigsaw puzzle one small piece at a time until you finally see the big picture.

Discover your preferences and let them guide you. Don’t get stuck preparing/over-analyzing, just start reading. Do you like/dislike old/new comics? Specific writers/genres? Cartoony/realistic art? Familiar/weird concepts? References/self-contained? All-ages/mature content? Follow these instincts. Didn’t understand a reference? Maybe read that next.

I absolutely loved the first one. Second one was second rate, IMO, but I had some fun watching it. Found out that the first one is based more heavily on the comic, which is a pretty awesome read if you're interested.

Alright OP, here's what I've got for you:

  • My favorite comic right now is East of West by Jonathan Hickman. This takes place in an alternate history America. It's a sci-fi western where the four horsemen of the apocalypse come down to begin the apocalypse. However, Death is our protagonist. Lots of mystery and world building. Don't expect it to move to fast, but it's fantastic.

  • In a completely different vein, Blankets by Craig Thompson. This is a coming of age story. It is sort of autobiographical. Definitely don't expect any powers or supernatural stuff here. Fantastic story, and it's not uncommon to hear about someone crying from this one.

  • If you want to go to a more sci-fi route, check out Black Science by Rick Remender. This title is loved by a lot of people. Each issue has a new dimension or planet or world to explore, and the art is absolutely gorgeous. This is like the action movie of my recommendations. It doesn't have the most depth, but the ride is a ton of fun.

  • If you love a good supernatural throwdown, check out Rumble by Jonn Arcudi. Fantastic art, and a very interesting zany world. The main character is a god who takes the form of a scarecrow. Really fun read and drawn really well.

  • Finally, my personal favorite: Hellboy by Mike Mignola. The Hellboy universe was started in the 90s, and so it is pretty expansive. However, Mignola prides himself on there being multiple jumping on points. I would recommend jumping in on Hellboy Vol. 1 or BPRD: Plague of Frogs Book 1. Plague of Frogs is definitely going to be the most bang for your buck. If you want a specific reading order to the series, this is the best one currently out there.

Good luck reading OP! Feel free to ask any questions.

I buying it. I'm buying it. Settle down. I just started reading comics again this year after like a 15 year break.

This is where I start right? http://www.amazon.com/Hellboy-Vol-1-Seed-Destruction/dp/1593070942/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408649778&sr=8-1&keywords=hellboy+graphic+novel

we have very similar tastes. check some of these out... the first 2 would be great ones to ask for, since they are a little pricier.

If I could only recommend one, it would be Mike Mignola's Hellboy.

The best place to start is Hellboy Vol.1: Seeds of destruction or buying the first Hellboy Library Edition(collects vol.1-3).

EDIT: Amazon.com link 1 and 2

Also I think that billion is a bit too high, I mean if we add France-Belgium and Japan then we are up in several millions perhaps.

Probably something on my non-public NSFW wishlist, but on the regular lists maybe this Hellboy Vol 1 graphic novel.

u/cerealb0x · 1 pointr/comicbooks

Hellblazer - "Dangerous Habits" inspired Constantine .

It's been a long time since i've seen Hellboy, so i barely remember the plot of the movie, but the first volume of Hellboy is a good start.

I did some research because I changed to internationally. Shipping a basic 1kg parcel from Hungary to the UK is 8600HUF (~37 USD/24GBP) which is a bit much.

However ordering from Amazon.co.ok lets say Hellboy vol1 for a comic book lover (8,80GBP) I could get the package shipped for ~2,75 GBP plus VAT if needed. Giftwrap is also available for for 3,04 GBP. Now if want to also send a postcard from Hungary to the UK its only 260HUF(0,74 GBP) with priority shipping.

Another example would be this awesome Portal 2 shirt from the j!nx EU store for ~18 euros. Shipping to the UK is 7,78 euros. Again, postcard HUN->UK less then one Euro.

For someone like me with veeery limited student funds its waay more preferrable to use this method.

Ofc another option would be the steam or GoG gift, with no shipping.

Yeah, if it was free to play I'd push a lot harder for people to try it, but I can understand not wanting to plop down thirty bucks for a game you're not sure you'd want.

However, I really love modern day/supernatural settings. Some of my favorite book series are The Nightside books by Simon R. Green, The Hollows series by Kim Harrison (especially so because I actually live near Cincinnati, which is where the books take place), The Hellboy graphic novel series, and so on.

So yeah, a game with a modern day setting where I get to spend hours fighting zombies, insane cultists, bloodthirsty vampires, and elder gods? Sign me up! :D

This might sound silly but I just bought this comic from my LCS.

The paper smelled really, really bad. Like to the point where I was getting a bit nauseous. Anyone else have this problem?
