I love my Touro external drive. It's 1TB so big enough to hold a bunch of games, and since it's 7200 rpm, it's fast as hell. Going from the internal to this external was a great upgrade in loading times. It's super quiet as well. I was using a regular 5200 3TB external, but the big boy was quite loud. I would recommend the Touro over and over again.

WD is a solid brand.

You can spend about $20 more for a "7200rpm" one which will load faster (slightely, not 100% faster or anything)

EDIT: NVM 5 dollars more, id highly recommend getting this 7200 rpm one

If you want smaller, this is a great one. 1 Year manufacturer warranty, with optional 2-year addition for less than $10 extra.

Not sure why I'm being downvoted for my opinion that was asked for by OP, but, okay.

I set up a headless boot-from-usb system with external drive happily powered without ever connecting it with HDMI (good thing, as I don't have the right HDMI cable).

As others told you, ssh is running by default (odroid/odroid).

Following the wiki instructions for booting of USB works nicely, and is a better choice than using SD for the root filesystem - at least based on all the RPi people talking about frequent filesystem corruptions.

Mine, with the Odroid-supplied power supply, happily spins up a HGST Touro S 1TB 7200RPM drive.

I don't really see a problem with using the USB drive - sure it may not be the fastest, but as a torrent and backup server (as I'm using it), it just isn't an issue. I'm pretty sure (?) that the limitation for these uses is the network rather than the disk - for getting files on and off it by whatever means.

Got this, works great. $60, USB 3.0, and 7200 rpm, which is rare in an external. HGST is a subsidiary of WD, but I have the opposite experience with them as you have. I have 3 other WD externals and they are amazing.
