I plopped one of these into my 2010 White Macbook. Works and fit wonderfully.

I bought an external drive enclosure and cloned (Carbon Copy Cloner) the internal drive to it. Shut it down. Swapped the drives (internal to the case, new drive into the MB) and restarted for an easy transition. Took about an hour total.

Mid-2009 13 and 15 inch Macbook Pros have compatibility problems with SATA II hard drives because of the EFI 1.7 firmware update. Most SATA II hard drives will cause beachballs in them every few minutes. You can read about the problem here and here. One solution is to take your Macbook Pro to the Apple Store and ask them to downgrade to EFI 1.6 Firmware. That might work.
Or you could try the Hitachi Travelstar 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I just put one in my mid-2009 13 inch Macbook Pro yesterday. It's working fine so far with no beachballs. The one I got at amazon.com came in a retail box.
