an Air Plant is as good idea as any. I know nothing about your sister, so it's hit or miss, but it's a great attempt. Great.
One of my RAs turned the bulletin board into a PostSecret board. They covered the board in different colored Post-Its and left some pens there and let students write down their secrets. That was pretty cool.
