There's another point to be made, distinct from "this is a bad implementation": asking someone to sort something in general makes for a poor interview question, because it's far too low level and specific.
More generally, brainteaser and puzzle interview questions are poor because they don't reflect the reality of the job and they rely far too much on specific knowledge. Wrote a blog post about it here:
