You could also get a small window fan and set it on exhaust while you're smoking. You'll lose some heat, but not as much as blowing fresh air in.

Don't put too much stock in those articles - it's a lot of speculation and fear mongering.

That said, the simplest way to do fume extraction is to buy a window fan kind of like this one and install it into a window near your printer blowing air out of the house. I do this when printing ABS and it practically eliminates all noticeable smells.

Consider getting a window fan that has an exhaust setting, we have the same problem in our condo and it helps considerably. They're also really good a cooling down small rooms.

Seems like you could maybe install some kind of ventilation in the garage to mitigate this. Could be as simple as this if you have a window.

If you just want a fan, it looks like this fan would fit.

If it's not humid, then a swamp cooler would probably work. They cool the air by evaporating water so they don't need an outside vent. I'm not sure how well it would work in a small area as it might humidify the air until it can't cool, but maybe with just the right air flow from the windows you could get a reasonable solution. I saw one on Amazon for $100.

Otherwise, a portable air conditioning unit would be the way to go. You could buy one used on Craigslist, use it while you need it and then probably sell it for the same price when you are done.

lived on the first floor of a UWP court during fall and spring term. highly recommend bringing a fan or two, especially a (reversible) window fan. had a small honeywell fan to circulate air around and a reversible window fan that fits in your sliding window.

i used my window fan to exhaust the air out in the morning or when it got hot. at night past 12:00 AM, the temperature would dip to below 20 degrees so i would use my window fan to blow air in to cool my room down by a huge factor. my room went from a sauna to a standard room with AC in 20 minutes. a window fan is very useful for a decent amount of temperature control in your room. very helpful for sleeping at night.

general ways of beating the heat would be to only go to your room to cook, shower, drop stuff off, or sleep. go to a place with AC (like grand commons or CMH) to study or do whatever instead. close all of your blinds and keep the lights off to keep your room as cool as possible. sleeping without a blanket became a necessity during the first couple weeks of september and all of july and august.

I have a roommate with a really smelly dog (apparently, anal glands get all over your stuff) and what I've done is get a plug in deodorizer and a exhaust fan. We leave all our windows open now and we put a screen on the door so we can leave that open too. For awhile, I really thought about just moving out of my own house.

I did just that for a GPU rig, though it was fairly gerryrigged. My basic shopping list:

  Assemble the shed and install the shelf, cut two holes in the front doors at the shelf level for the gable vents and one big hole in the back at shelf level for the window fan, and install/wedge items in holes accordingly. Cutting the holes was a pain, I thought a Dremel would work well but it's slow and loud as hell so I ended up using a drywall saw that worked surprisingly well. I ran a cord for a power strip out the back under the fans.
  
  Mine sits at the back of a covered patio that's about 8-10 feet deep, so it's not directly exposed to rain or any significant elements. You might be able to make it work if you've got some overhang and you can put the back of the cabinet up close to a wall where water won't hit the fans too much. I also glued some dust filter material to the inside of the gable vents to help filter dust out, and I blow the setup out every now and then.

I have one in each window of the rooms, haven't gotten more for other areas, the AC only really works in the living room / kitchen, but these fans work great for everywhere else. It really is more a matter of whether you realize that the less you move the easier your body gets acclimated to the temperature, the sweat is your body's AC, and if you also use a few small personal fans, you can have a "breeze" helping things out. Some people only prefer AC because they don't want to sweat or are spoiled a bit by it. I wanted to move apartments before the summer came to a place with central air. We're already paying out the nose, so that little missing perk makes it annoying (we also don't have many amenities and it sucks paying the same as other places that do)

There are fancier ones with a thermostat, which I guess is nice if you don't want them to run all the time, but at the end of the day this is going to get the job done.

I use a window fan for the same reason, you should try it.

Use a fan set to reverse on the kitchen window to draw all the smoke outside. This solved the problem for me.

The first window fan I've tried was too weak and broke easily, the second one was more reliable but still too weak, so I eventually settled on a regular box fan like this. The box fan is cheap, powerful, and easy to install and remove.

The downsides are that it is not very practical in cold climates and harsh winters, the fan gets dirty quickly and it's hard to clean.

I used to use a window fan like this one ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00008XET9/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?qid=1380664428&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70). You could switch the fans to blow in or out. I just sit and smoked by that fan and the smoke never lingered.

The most beneficial thing for you would be exhausting heat. If you have two windows i would recommend these point one to blow in and one to blow out. If you don't have two windows then you should exhaust the heat.

I have my window fans temp controlled right now. they turn on when the temp outside is lower then the temp inside.

I use ds18b20 temp probes and a relay to control my AC fan.

Have you considered one of these Holmes window fans? I've seen a ton of them at Goodwill, recently. Perhaps you could check your local Goodwill.

I have this Lasko box fan. It has a lot of power. It'll blow air, for sure. You aren't going to want to sit directly in its stream, though, or it'll dry out your throat and give you a headache. If it's cool outside, you can stick it on HIGH in the window, and your room will cool down in a couple of minutes.

If you need simple air circulation on the cheap, get a knock-off Vornado Honeywell air circulator. It'll move air around your bedroom fairly well. Just make sure you aim it across the room at a corner, like this.

You can also get a high velocity fan if you don't mind the noise.

I'm in a similar position to you, I airbrush in my office along with my computer, desk, shelves, etc. Even down to having two cats.

You're definitely on the right track with the cleaning pot and mask; the pot should have a filter to keep the paint in, make sure you clean/replace the filter when it gets saturated.

1. Our cats are banned from the office. This is mostly for their health -- if you don't want to breath the paint/chemicals they shouldn't either. Doubly so since they're smaller so they'll feel the affects more acutely. Also note that having cats in the painting area can lead to stray hairs landing on drying paint which can mess with the paint job.
   
   Additionally, I magnetize some of my minis so there's the chance that I could drop small magnets on the floor and those are super bad if eaten by a curious cat. Like emergency surgery bad. Consider other aspects of the hobby as well when evaluating your furry friend's health risks. For us they add up to a ban on the office entirely.
   
   
2. I've never had any problems with paint getting on other surfaces. I use a ghetto cardboard box spray booth that catches overspray and have a window fan blowing out while painting. I have 2 windows side by side so fresh air comes in from outside and then gets blown out by the fan.
   
   
3. I doubt that you need to just give up, but it is definitely worth taking some steps to make sure everything works out. If you don't have a door at all in your painting room maybe you can just get a baby gate or something to help keep the cats out while you're painting. To help keep the "paint smell" from permeating your whole house you can try opening a window on the far side of the house and then the window fan will pull fresh air through your entire home.

Get one of these or similar. We used it to clear the room of smoke. Lifesaver.

Have you looked into a window fan? I have something like this.

Install onto window and make sure it's blowing outwards. Smoke by the window and watch all the smoke get sucked out. It's not 100% but its very effective in my situation. If you have another window available, leave it open and use that as fresh air intake intake. For redundancy put a towel under the door and have some Ozium on hand.

I don't really know about keeping it cool with anything other than fans or a window ac unit. This unit is pretty cheap for fans in the window. As for the people outside, they will always be there during huge parties.

I used to have one of these fans in the window when I lived in a house with no AC or vent fan in the bathroom. It was awesome in the summer.

How do I combat septoria?

You cheapest option will be to keep the window open an put an air exchanger fan in it, like this. The two fans work in opposite directions, so one brings fresh air in and the other pushes air out. If you can't keep the window open, a dehumidifier is likely to be your nest cheapest option to reduce humidity. This is the one I have.

I'd highly recommend a window fan, like this one. It's good at circulating air into your dorm and not too expensive. I had one of these and it helped keep my dorm relatively cool most of the year.

You can buy window fans like this to help exhaust the hot air. A portable AC system would work as well, but be much more expensive upfront and in energy costs.
