Dude, just buy a doorbell
As has been said. Strip it, and use the shell and buttons. But start from scratch internally. Unless you wanted to sneak some wires through the wall, I'd buy something like this and connect it's button electronics to your things button.
You could buy a wireless doorbell at the hardware store. Here is one model that blinks a light while also ringing a bell. Then open the receiver's case and solder in a little circuit that blinks a light whenever the bell rings.
You could also get a "Wireless Remote Control Outlet Switch" like one of these. Then plug your flashing light into one of the outlets.
