  The back of this is a little wonky. I have my Chromecast plugged into my Xbox. I use the travel router to turn my University public wifi into a personalized hotspot so I can use my Chromecast and Chromecast audio (with aweseome Castdock speaker). I use a Monoprice HMDI pigtail to have my Xbox and Chromebox HDMI cords both to the right monitor and switch between the two when I need to.

A travel hotspot/router solves that problem! I picked up the HooToo Travel Hotspot and just plug it into ethernet, or connect that to hotel Wifi. Then connect your Chromecast to the wifi given off from the hotspot and you're good to go, just like a regular wifi network.

You could get a small travel router that can connect to a guest wifi and get you past the splash/log in page.

Then connect the Home to the travel router.

It can be powered with a USB cable off a laptop or cellphone charger.

Two things off the top of my head:

2. Buy a USB wifi dongle so your laptop has two wifi adapters, then you should be able to connect to the hotel wifi with one adapter and share the connection with the other one

I don't believe so, if only because to do what you want it to would require two separate sets of Wi-Fi antennas. It's also why most laptops also can't do this with a hotel Wi-Fi but can become a hotspot if the hotel offers an ethernet connection

This won't help you right now, but as someone who travels a lot for work (~2 weeks/month for 10 months out of the year), I've been using the HooToo TripMate Nano for the past year and it's been very reliable. The device will allow you to connect to a hotel's Wi-Fi and create your own personal Wi-Fi network, works fine with browser-based hotel logins, and has a USB port to attach a network drive to share files. It's also dirt cheap, for what it does.

If you can't connect your HD straight to your router, get one of these. I use it to connect a 2TB NTFS formatted drive to my 8 year old router and can find all the files in Kodi just fine.

Well the Stick does not have a USB input for drives so that rules that out period.

The Box does have a USB input but it does only fat32 (NO NTFS) so it is a max of 2 TB drive and files up to 4GB,that will rule out 720p+ movies.

Without setting your hard drive up as a network share somehow then I would not recommend the AFTV. Someone in another thread suggested this as a plain media player for attached storage:

I switched from WDTVs and have both a stick and box, without a good router the stick will be a little problematic sometimes, I much prefer the hard wired box and works great using Kodi with my NAS. I also will pop some things on a microSD card to play real quick.

Call the front desk and ask for their technical support number. If they have one call it and ask them to whitelist your Switch on the network. They will need your MAC address.

Another way to solve for this if you travel a lot is get a Hootoo Wireless Router. I bought one last year when I was traveling up to a week per month and it was fabulous.

The idea of an integrated travel plug adapter is nice, but the Kikkerland one I linked in a different fork of the thread is smaller to pack and I prefer having the two separate - usually I want to plug in devices near the bed, but the Ethernet port is often near a desk instead.

More often than not any given apartment in downtown Berlin will be in range of at least one of the several commercial wlan networks (Vodafone, T-Online, Hotsplots). For example in my last apartment in Berlin Mitte I could connect to five of them (often they are actually separate wlans running on private routers, so technically it is actually your neighbors you are connecting to).

It usually costs around 30€/month (I think) with unlimited traffic and usually very decent bandwidth for one (!) device. But with a bit of tech ingenuity (or even better and dead easy: an inexpensive travel router like for example this) you can make it work for all your gadgets. The travel router connects to the commercial wlan, then it opens its own private wlan for your devices. Bought mine a couple of years ago, now it is among the first things I pack, wouldn't want to travel without one. First you really need to check for the strength of the signal though, anything less than 50% will be a bit of a pain.

For on the go, a Fire TV Stick (gen 2) with an OTG cable is the way to go, unless you need 4K. If you have non-Fat32 drives that hold your media that you don't want to reformat, I'd suggest some sort of file sharing device to make them available over a network. I'm using a super cheap PogoPlug that I've enabled SMB sharing on, and it feeds 1080p to my FireTVs flawlessly.

It can connect to an existing wifi network or a wired network. I use it when I travel and it works great.

Use a travel router as a bridge. You use their app to sign the router into your university's network. This gives the router access to the internet. Now you have your own private network with the standard SSID and password which you can connect the google home to.

I just have a TripMate Nano for less than $20. Can connect to hotel wifi then bridge to your own private network in the room, or even plug into the LAN if there is an active one in the room and create a personal wifi network.

If you travel a lot it might be worth looking into a travel router like this one. Takes a few minutes to setup but allows Chromecast to work.

I'm using a mobile router to share internet with my laptop and phone at work and this has been coming up for the past few weeks when I try to access the game through wifi, but loads fine with a data connection. I've tried clearing the cache, uninstalling & reinstalling but nothing works. Any suggestions?

A Wireless Travel Router is what you need. This will bridge the campus wifi to your own private wifi. All of your wireless devices will appear to the campus as a single wifi device. You can then connect your notebook, phone, sonos, etc. to the private wifi side while still retaining internet access.

You should check your school's AUP to make sure this is OK to do.

Check out the HooToo travel routers. The basic one here is good up to 4TB and the higher models have other features that aren't really related to the NAS portion. The only thing is that your devices would have to connect to this hotspot to share the NAS.

This one is $20. It's tiny. No one would ever notice it. Name the wifi network iPhone or something like that and you'll be golden. Also you won't have to mess around with your Chromebook every time you want to connect a device.

Runs off micro USB so I don't have to worry about how to power it when I'm in another country really. I just run it off my battery pack if I have to. It works well with hotel portals. Works perfect with the hotels Ethernet connection (although many hotels nowadays have Wifi only). It's only 2.4ghz wifi-n so the highest speed you can every possibly get is like 70mb/s. The range is pretty much like the size of your room. You can plug in a USB drive to pull files and stuff if you need to like a media server. I used that part like once, when I first tested it to see if it works LOL

Grab a retractable cat5e cable while you're at it since most hotels don't even supply that cable nowadays and you should be good for the most part.

I’m not recommending this specifically, but a device link this will let you connect to the office pvlan WiFi and rebroadcast as a standard WiFi network. Also has a wired port, if that is an option.

They are designed for small groups in shared spaces / hotels, so you may not get good performance all the time, but for your presentation, it’s probably be fine.

As the building doesn’t seem to pitch a fit about hot spotting, I don’t think they’d had an issue here either.

Note: This is still a hack. There are recommendations to work with your shared space provider. That is the “right” choice. These are useful for other scenarios though.

Do you need it plugged directly into Ethernet? I have this travel adapter that turns Ethernet into a WiFi router/hotspot. (If we knew more about your situation we could probably give better suggestions)

There's a cheap, easy way around the redirect/sign in problem. Bring a travel router. I own the hootoo tripmate elite and I bring it and my chromecast on vacation all the time

Ok thanks for the info! I'll do some more research tomorrow but this have given me a huge starting point. I wasn't ever thinking of USB 3.0, but would just do 2.0.

I found something like this but as far as I know it only supports USB mass storage. The main goal is something similar to this, but with a keyboard, and the thumb drive was a afterthought.

I might mess around with the esp32's and see what I can do. I understand what you're saying, but I unfortunately don't think I have the skills right now, but it will still be a fun learning experience.

I use a HooToo Tripmate, and love it for this purpose. You can plug in any size flash drive or hard drive and it creates a little wifi hotspot to stream movies or files without need for Internet. However if you're in a place with wired Internet such as a hotel it can kill two birds with one stone and act as a fully functional router, too.

It also powers through my Mophie so I can confirm that you can just throw it in a backpack and have it run for a while, even with no plugs.

You can use any router with wireless connectivity of any kind to achieve what you want. A cheap travel router with wireless capabilities would work.

Just create a SSID on this travel router, and have your laptop and ipad connect to this SSID at the same time. If you have DHCP enabled, they'll both be on the same subnet and can talk to each other, whether or not the router is connected to the Internet.

I just bought a hootoo tripmate nano, it's a small USB powered router, it can do exactly what you want, it can connect to a wired or wireless network and it creates his own wifi network to accept up to 5 devices. I paid 25$ CAD on amazon for it.

I will be using it in a different scenario, I'm using it to have wifi in my car for all passengers.

It can also accept a USB drive and will share it via smb or their app (ios and android) and play the files from there. It says Chromecast is supported as well. But I haven't tried Chromecast just yet.

You can screen mirror without internet, but not cast. You still need a network both are connected to - it just doesn't require internet connection.
