If you're interested in stuff like that, Horror Video Games is a pretty excellent book that introduced me to that concept. One of my last essays for college actually used that book and Dwarf Fortress as references.
The two "main" works on the subject of HPL in the popular culture are H.P. Lovecraft in Popular Culture: The Works and Their Adaptations in Film, Television, Comics, Music and Games by Don Smith and The Cult of Alien Gods: H.P. Lovecraft And Extraterrestrial Pop Culture by Jason Covalito. Smith's book is very broad, very shallow, very incomplete, but a starting point - most books about Lovecraft don't go into the games at all - Covalito's book is better researched but more focused on the UFOology connections. New Critical Essays on H. P. Lovecraft has some articles on pop-culture, but is absurdly expensive - see if you can get it through interlibrary loan - and not really oriented toward video gaming. Horror Video Games: Essays on the Fusion of Fear and Play, includes the essay "Reanimating Lovecraft: The Ludic Paradox of Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth."
As far as individual articles are concerned, you might also be interested in "Form over function: the use of Lovecraftian elements in World of Warcraft".
My university teacher actually teaches a lot about horror and he wrote this book on Horror Video Games.
It was very interesting and one of the few academic book about the horror genre.
