According to [How to Be a Gentleman: A Timely Guide to Timeless Manners](http://www.amazon.com/How-Be-Gentleman-Timeless-Manners/dp/1401603351/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1252680779&sr=8-1 "A book which I regard as an essential reference") the crotch is the polite way to go.
