I would recommend a printer B/W minimum because there will be moments where you need printouts asap and going to the library/engr everyday just to print is a pain. The brother laser B/W printer is super cheap. One toner cartridge lasts me a year for $11.

Ooh, I did this too! I looked for something that could handle various envelope and paper sizes and weights, in particular. I didn't pay much attention to the printing speed, but I did to the dpi. I was also a little budget-strapped, which was unfortunate. There are some awesome ones (especially if you look for photo printers, those are great at handling thick paper and making everything super crisp) at a few hundred dollars more. I wound up with this which has been pretty good. I've printed photos on it that have come out nice. I haven't done my invitations yet (hopefully this week!) but I did the envelopes and those turned out great. It took a little while to figure out how to do it since it turns out they're not a standard size (well. They sort of are for envelopes, A6, but I only had the A6 paper in there, not envelope) but I just put the same envelope in 2-3 times to try different things and found what worked, and they came out super pretty.
What fuckin printer were they buying? I get that buying ink is expensive, but I compared the page yield of a HP 5540 to the price of the refill it takes. The Printer sells for 49.99 (down from a max of 129.99) used on Amazon, and it comes with approximately 200 pages of black ink. The xl replacement cartridge is 39.89, and comes with 600 pages of ink.
You would need to spend less than 15 dollars on purchasing a new printer for the starter cartridges it comes with to be cheaper than buying a replacement XL. This is assuming a best case scenario where the printer is at its cheapest, and the ink is bought at full price. It's even cheaper if you buy third party cartridges or get them refilled. There's also a popular anecdote that the starter cartridges only contain a fraction of the ink of a standard refill, but since I wasn't able to find any definitive numbers to back up this claim, I didn't take it into consideration. It would only lessen the $/page yield of buying a new printer vs refilling. Your milage may vary, however. I didn't have a lot of time to compare other printers, but I can't imagine it's more economic on the higher end of things.
God damn, I work in electronics and the amount of people who think they're outsmarting multibillion-dollar companies by buying a new printer instead of getting a refill is so annoying. Buy a $200 laser printer and buy $20 refills on amazon. The amount of electronic waste people create is staggering.
