I have a full size quad that I built. I also have a hubsan.

I highly recommend getting the hubsan to practice with. it's cheap, easy to repair, and does a good job training flight skills.

one with camera ($30):

On a side note, I am floored at how cheap the fpv and camera models are.

u/nerobro · 6 pointsr/fpv

$500 is a tight budget. $500 can get you "something that flies" and "something that's FPV." At the $500 level, you're talking 4-12 minutes.

Wind handling comes from "being fast" and "having a decent flight controller". Naze32, Flip32, KK2 2.1, NAZA, etc.. are all good flight controlers.

The big question is, what are you trying to do? Just "get in and have fun?" Well, in that case I'd probally point you at something like a the Proto or Hubsan ready to fly FPV quads, and a second, non FPV quad for bashing around. Buy two of the same brand, and a half a dozen batteries, and a good charger.

Quadcopters break. And they break, a lot. The bigger they are, the more they break. If you oops, you've lost a prop. If you oops hard, you've broken an airframe, bent a motor shaft, popped a battery... something like that.

If you're determined to fly something larger, you're going to eat the budget quickly.

So "the nerobro way"

Hubsan 104d FPV: $150

That'll get you something to learn with, and something to fly FPV with for less than $350. And you will NOT be bored. :-) And if you really screw up, you'll have spare parts. Consider adding a few more batteries.

Here is a good entry level model that is easier to fly then some of the higher end models. It's also extremely durable.

You won't be able to take photos in a quality like OP's, but it's a really fun quad.

u/MexicanGuey · 6 pointsr/Multicopter

If you are starting out I would personally get a cheap $30-$50 Husban quad to get the feel of it. You will be crashing often and you dont want to ruin expensive equipment. But if you really want FPV I would get this

http://www.amazon.com/Hubsan-Quadcopter-FPV-Camera-Toy/dp/B00GSNWB5K

Half the price. Then use the money you saved to out it towards a DIY later.

u/mike413 · 5 pointsr/Quadcopter

There are 4 models, the h107c has two versions
H107L - no camera
H107C - two versions - vga and HD/720p
H107D - fpv version with display on remote
there are also hubsan-specific add-on goggles for the H107D that plug into the remote

u/fx32 · 5 pointsr/videos

Very low end FPV quadcopters can be bought or made for $100-$150, but around $500 is where you can expect to get decent video quality & drone performance. That is excluding a ground receiver ($30 and up) & goggles ($100 and up).

So I'd guess a minimum of about $300, but full immersion is a big part of it, so spending >$1000 wouldn't be abnormal to get video quality & responsiveness to acceptable levels. Still affordable for a hobby in my opinion.

u/mcfearless86 · 3 pointsr/fpv

This how I started it every thing you need to get up and flying an it cost $80 so you both can get one

Also I recommend tilting the camera and mounting the antenna to the top of the quad plenty of videos on this guy too

u/LoveWaffle · 3 pointsr/fpvracing

Considering these kids likely do not have multirotor experience, much less FPV experience, I'd recommend the FPV version of the Hubsan X4. For people interested in getting into quadcopters, its a good idea to start small because lighter quads are more crash resistant. Its not a question of if you will crash, but when. I learned how to fly with a bare-bones Hubsan X4. The FPV version (H107D) includes a screen on the transmitter so you can fly FPV or line of sight comfortably, and switch between the two flying styles quickly and easily. The cost is lower than you'll find for any 250mm+ DIY setup. These can fly inside or outside, so even on a rainy day you can still have fun.

A quick google search brings up prices ranging from $119-199, median cost about $145.

http://www.amazon.com/Hubsan-H107D-FPV-Mini-Quadcopter/dp/B00GSNWB5K

Once you and the kids get better at controlling the quads and want a more capable setup, I would look into the DIY 250mm kits/builds other posters have suggested. Its a lot of cash to drop to build nice 250 quads if your pilots have no experience.

u/lispychicken · 3 pointsr/drones

Not gonna happen.

  1. it requires either goggles or a screen (phone)
  2. if it doesnt require either because it's built into the TX, it's over $30.00

Bump your budget up to $80.00
    https://www.amazon.com/Hubsan-Quadcopter-FPV-Camera-Toy/dp/B00GSNWB5K/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1501192689&sr=8-10&keywords=FPV+Drone

and he WILL crash it.. so keep spare props in mind
u/honestbleeps · 2 pointsr/videos

this one doesn't include the goggles/downlink, but has a camera/gimbal built in: http://www.allerc.com/dji-phantom-2-ready-to-fly-quadcopter-includes-h3-3d-gopro-gimbal-p-8976.html

disclosure: that's my brother's business/website I'm linking to.

You can get in cheaper than this, but you're going to be building it yourself etc. I'd recommend the wiki etc over in /r/multicopter if that's more your thing.

EDIT: on the toy level, you could get a hubsan x4 that does FPV super cheaply... just not going to be the same quality. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GSNWB5K/ref=s9_simh_gw_p21_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=097TAZVMG32BXEWJ5EE2&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1688200382&pf_rd_i=507846

There is a version of the x4 that has FPV, with a screen built into the controller. $140 (i'm assuming US dollars..?)

Well if you are talking about FPV would this work?

u/EasyiceFPV · 2 pointsr/drones
u/fluffyponyza · 2 pointsr/diydrones

It's unfortunately not the same as with a PC.

One of the main things that has changed the way computing works was the creation of influential hardware standards, most especially in the 90s and 2000s. Things like the ISA standard would eventually lead to the development of PCI, AGP, and eventually PCI-e and its variants. Part of the reason for this is that the PC industry, even in the 90s, was a multi-billion Dollar industry with massive global players who couldn't afford to have their equipment not work all the peripherals.

The multicopter / RC industry is, by and large, still a hobby-driven industry. Even though there are some amazing applications of it across various sectors, there simply isn't enough of a market to create and enforce standards unilaterally. Manufacturers are so used to doing their own thing that they'd be hard-pressed to put in the time and effort to retool and redevelop to support a standard.

What I'd suggest you do is buy a small quad to learn to fly, something like the Hubsan H107D, which is ~$190. You'll have a lot of fun, you'll learn the basics of FPV, you'll learn how to fly, you'll film some crazy videos, you'll learn about antennae and interference and all sorts.

Then when you're a confident flyer pick up a Taranis transmitter, should set you back ~$150 - $200, and you'll learn about radio binding, transmitter configuration, the nature of open-source RC software, and so on.

Finally, if at that stage you're still interested, sell the Hubsan and build a 250mm - 450mm sized quad. The parts list that /u/dicknuckle is an excellent start, although you'll already have a transmitter and so you won't have to buy a radio set (just a receiver).

u/harry_hastur · 2 pointsr/Quadcopter

This is a little above the price range you mentioned, but it's got EVERYTHING, including the FPV goggles.

I learned to fly on a Hubsan, great little quads to learn on.

u/Dr_Pipe · 2 pointsr/drones

I think the absolute cheapest FPV (first person view, watching it live) setup is probably the Hubsan H107D X4

http://www.amazon.com/Hubsan-H107D-FPV-Mini-Quadcopter/dp/B00GSNWB5K/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1421781609&sr=8-6&keywords=hubsan+x4

This is a pretty small drone and the camera wouldn't really be suitably if you wanted to take good pictures, but it's probably enough to have fun flying around with. And it would be good practice if you haven't flown a quadcopter before and are just getting into it.

The Parrot AR 2.0 is like 350-400 and the Parrot Bebop is like 500. These are basically made for photography and come equipped with a much better camera that you can watch live from your phone. The biggest drawback people seem to talk about these is that you have to pay $400 for a sky controller if you want to control it using a handheld controller instead of your phone.

I don't really know much about the jamara observer but I would double check that you can actually watch the camera live. From what I saw looking at it a bit it seems to have a camera but I don't think you can watch it live while flying.

Wow! Great find! /s

Hubsan's site is down atm... It didn't get a Reddit hug, did it?

Amazon link -- $159

Yeah the Hubsan x4s are a lot of fun, and sturdy as hell.

u/MoreGBsPlease · 2 pointsr/gadgets

Unfortunately, there's a huge gap between the beginner quadcopters and the DJI Phantoms or Parrots, as far as camera quality goes. For $70 you can grab a smaller one that has a 720p camera (albeit only 2MP) or this same one for $160 that has a worse camera but active FPV. I can't personally recommend either one though. You could always try to wire in a replacement camera without much difficulty, but you'd want to look into the weight differences.

u/KabaI · 2 pointsr/fpvracing

Note, that copter will not allow FPV. The camera on board is only for recording to the SD card. The version of that same drone which actually has a vtx is this one

u/Achoo01 · 2 pointsr/3Dprinting

Probably should've done some research before telling him that. You're not going to get any kind of decent kit with a camera included for less than you say.

That said, there ARE cheaper options like Hubsan. Cheap, but also not a bad idea for a first quad as it'll get wrecked alot.

u/JohnEdwa · 1 pointr/Multicopter

I know it's a cultural difference, but I think exchanging a gift for a different one if it gets more use makes way more sense. You would most likely have way more fun with a micro FPV quad like the Hubsan H107D for example.

u/Lonely_Kobold · 1 pointr/Quadcopter

I don't have a drone yet but from the ones I've looked at the Syma x5sw has most of what you require. The Hubsan x4 is smaller, more expensive, and doesnt seem to connect to your phone. If you want, you could go with one with a little more lift like the syma x8 or the tarantula and then upgrade with an fpv camera package of your choosing. Theres also lots of options in building your own from the frame up but that can get pricy.
I guess the biggest question is what are you going to be using your drone for?

u/Odious_Emu · 1 pointr/Multicopter

This is the only thing that comes to mind that meets your criteria.

About the best deal/price to what you are looking for. It is a toy, but still a good starter for your requirements (also slightly more than half your budget).

Here is the thing. If he isn't going or wanting to use a phone for the video, then that is added cost to the platform, and limits how good it will be to stay on budget.

u/gotta_talk_someplace · 1 pointr/Quadcopter

That's my second quad. (UDI 818 was first). The camera is not particularly good, but the quad is a decent starter one. It's not really meant for outdoors. I flew mine outside (Christmas Day last year) and saw it go flyaway when the wind picked up a bit.

This one is small, but it is FPV, and in your price range

Cheaper, maybe, but not by much with goggles.

Quads built yourself generally are ones you wouldn't want to be flying around inside the house as well.

If you just want to get in the air and have FPV going, you could consider a Hubsan X4 H107D:
http://www.amazon.com/Hubsan-H107D-FPV-Mini-Quadcopter/dp/B00GSNWB5K

Or a Ladybird FPV: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2EE10T4994&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleMKP-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleMKP-PC-_-pla-_-RC+Toys-_-9SIA2EE10T4994&gclid=CLmzvLuU0cICFRBgfgodj40Avg&gclsrc=aw.ds

Both come ready to fly as well as a monitor for fpv on the transmitter

u/remotaholic · 1 pointr/drones

Does it have to be android controlled? The Hubsan h107D would be ideal and the video streams direct to the controller. Just make sure to get a crash pack in case he breaks it.

u/ferminriii · 1 pointr/pics

I know this isn't exactly the same thing but this costs a hell of lot less than the military rated $200k

u/the_flying_fish · 1 pointr/Multicopter

To be honest, you're being quite vague about what experience you want to have. But given that you mentioned the Amazon gift card, I'll throw you some options from there, since you may view it as an opportunity to just 'blow' the money on something you otherwise wouldn't spend your own cash on.

If you are possibly interested in FPV, you could do worse than an all in one kit with a whoop, controller and goggles. It's really entry level/fun stuff, but will give you a feel for FPV flying and you can do it in the comfort of your own home:

Makerfire Whoop

If you just want something a little bigger you can fly about your yard and use your phone with over wifi and maybe take some passable shots of your bbq party or whatever, then maybe something like this (lots of similar options around the price):

Holy Stone Wifi drone

Another option for a cheap small drone with a controller that has an fpv screen built-in and can fly indoors or outdoors, is a Hubsan X4. I actually started with one of these. The camera isn't great and its hard to actually fly FPV with it, but the thing is easy to fly LoS and goes like stink for such a little thing:

Hubsan x4

There is also a larger version of that Hubsan, but still in your budget, the h502s:

Hubsan H502s

Lastly, if you want to be able to take some actually half decent footage and are happy to throw some extra money on top of the gift card, you could do a lot worse than a Hubsan h501s:

Hubsan h501s

Although personally I think the advanced version with the upgrade controller is a better option, but does cost more. I have one of these and they are really quite capable drones:

Hubsan h501s pro

Anyhoo, hope some of that might be useful. Good luck and welcome to the hobby!

u/sethobrvt · 1 pointr/vermont

I used something like this to get the hang of flying and to be able to practice indoors: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MNG37C2?keywords=syma%20x5c&qid=1457981447&ref_=sr_1_4&s=toys-and-games&sr=1-4

It is cheap enough that a crash won't be too devastating and it is actually really durable - I have had countless crashes with no damage other than scuffing up the body.

I have never used one of these, but they are commonly recommended for beginners who want to try a drone with First Person View: http://www.amazon.com/Hubsan-Quadcopter-FPV-Camera-Toy/dp/B00GSNWB5K/ref=as_li_bk_ia/?tag=rccrunch-20&linkId=e522285040ac3b30a050de062892e974&linkCode=kia

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/djiphantom

Search amazon for hubson. They have a range cheap quads.

This one is a bit more pricey than their entry level mini quads but it has FPV so it might be more apples to apples training.

Or are these just gimmick drones. I want to learn to fly before I drop 500+ into one and crash it

u/PussyWagon6969 · 1 pointr/djiphantom

I learned on on one of these. They fit in the palm of your hand and are extremely responsive. A bit scary in any sort of wind but excellent to learn on to get the feel of movement...there are cheaper ones available that have cameras without FPV and even cheaper ones without cameras around $36. Once you master this moving to DJI Phantom will be quite a breeze because of the weight and overall stability of the craft!
