The other thing to remember is YOU CANNOT HELP.
Sorry, but it's true. You are not superman. It sucks to watch someone you care for hurting so deeply and there isn't anything you can do. Trying desperately to help, to keep pushing will only drive her further in on herself.

It will pass.

One of the better books on the subject: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1845295897

It will be harder for you to watch when she is depressed, but frankly sometimes I feel the mania is the more dangerous of the two phases. She'll need your support then especially (not that she'll notice :) ).

A guy I know recommends this book for explaining to friends/family about what it's like to have depression:

I Had a Black Dog, Matthew Johnstone

I haven't read it myself, though.

Hey I've been through something similar recently and I really couldn't recommend this book highly enough.

I had a black dog by Matthew Johnstone

It's not a proper sit down read book but the illustrations hit home on so many levels and really helps me understand how I'm coping and doing.

Good luck, I hope you things pick up for you.

I would also greatly recommend I Had A Black Dog. A wonderfully succinct and readable book.
